Liveblogging: Super Bowl XLI

Even though most years I haven't had much emotional investment in either team, the Super Bowl and I have always gotten along well. The last time I was really interested in the game itself was 2000, when the St. Louis Rams were there -- led by Kurt Warner, who happened to go to my high school. My husband and I went to a Super Bowl party that year, and because I was 8 months pregnant at the time, I was given one of the best seats in the house and had people constantly bringing me food. I think I gained the last 10 pounds of my pregnancy that day.

Today, we're watching the Super Bowl at home -- just me, my husband, and our two sons. And now that I've had my quick refresh on how many downs in a series, and the difference between offsides and illegal motion, I'm all set. I'm rooting for the Bears, just because I have ties to Chicago and a few Bears fans in my family. I'll probably be more entertained by the commercials than I am by the game, but if you want to talk football, we can definitely talk football.

5:38 - Salesgenie.com - I think they just spent their entire annual budget on a commercial. Who are they?

5:40 - Jadore, on the other hand, has gotten a buttload of ads. A product for women with ads targeted to men....interesting.

5:43 - I just put my son's sippy cup in a beer koozie. Somebody call Meredith Vieira. Oh, and it looks like Salesgenie.com is sponsoring the pre-game show. Wow.

5:48 - Gloria Estefan gets to introduce Cirque de Soliel, while Billy Joel gets the national anthem and Prince gets halftime. Miami kind of gave her the shaft, huh?

Maybe she'll get more than this.

5:57 - Combos: BEST COMMERCIAL EVER.

6:02 - Okay, this is what I love best about TV sports -- the fabulous, emotional montages. Excellent stuff.

6:10 - More montage-y goodness!

6:17 - Billy Joel. NOT lip-synching. Good for him.

6:21 - Jessica Simpson, you are better at commercials than anything else you have done so far. Stick with it, girlfriend.

6:22 - To recap so far: Pre-game entertainment - excellent. National anthem: not bad. Moving Montages: oh, so excellent. Commercials: eh, okay, hope they get a LOT better.

6:27 - Devin Hestor is THE MAN! Way to score on the VERY FIRST PLAY!

6:30 - Charlene will keep us posted on any celebratory gunfire in the Chicago area.

6:35 - Not a good day for Peyton Manning so far.

6:41 - Phil Stubbs pitching Sierra Mist. Love it.

6:50 - So that Bud Light commercial? My wedding was nearly that fast.

6:55 - I'm guessing no one was planning on Miami having such crappy weather for this.

6:59 - Very cool Chevrolet ad. And yeah, that Snickers ad was ridiculous.

7:04 - I would have missed the Oprah/Dave thing if it hadn't been for ya'll in the comments! Oh, and Tivo. hilarious.

7:14 - Free advertising for CBS, putting their sitcom stars in the crowd. David Spade doesn't look too thrilled to be there.

7:17 - That was not what I expected from GoDaddy. But the Coke commercial was awesome.

7:23 - Good move, Colts.

7:26 - Yeah, the Bud dog commercial was good, but it seems like there aren't as many laugh out loud, really memorable commercials this year. Is it just me?

7:29 - OK, now that i said that, there are 2 really funny ones in a row. Doritos and Career Builder. HA!!!

7:30 - And now the shirtless Chevy ad!

7:32 - My god, the rain. It looks like they rubbed Vaseline on the camera lens like they do for shooting Cybil Shepherd.

7:44 - All these poor people out in the rain....the players, the camerapeople, the coaches, and all those poor people who paid assloads of money for their tix. Life sucks in Miami.

7:52 - With all the discussion about gay commercials going on in the comments, I'm watching the game in a whole different way now. Hrrmmmm.....vedddy interesting.

7:54 - Supposedly, 40% of Super Bowl viewers are female. But the commercials don't seem to reflect that much at all.

8:00 - Too damn many commercials for CBS's own shows. Bring on Prince! And Amanda, I have no idea who watches all that CSI stuff. I watched CSI Miami a few times, but could hardly stand David Caruso.

8:05 - Calista called it. Prince = awesome. And what a cool opening.

8:19 - Well, the rest of the game is just going to seem boring after that.

8:26 - So a quick first half recap: It's really, really, really slippery. The game is surprisingly close. The commercials are incredibly gay. Literally. And Prince totally rocked half time.

8:41 - This 3rd quarter is off too kind of a tedious start, huh? But here is the Sheryl Crow - Revlon commercial I've been hearing about. With her hairdresser, OMG. I'm beginning to buy Tracey's theory more and more.

8:53 - Again, wondering if it's just me, or do these announcers really suck?

8:55 - About the CareerBuilder ads - they had tons of build-up over the last few weeks. I even saw TV spots advertising for them saying "watch for our ads during the Super Bowl." Theirs were definitely some of the best of the night so far, but I'm not sure they were worthy of all the hype.

8:59 - OMG! K-Fed! I nearly forgot.

9:11 - They have been pimping the hell out of Katie Couric all night.

9:22 - I'm beginning to think it's over for Chicago. Never would have guessed.

9:36 - Will Rex Grossman go down in history as they guy who lost the Super Bowl for the Bears in 07?

9:44 - OK, YouTube has the voting set up for the best Super Bowl commercials here: http://www.youtube.com/superbowl

9:59 - Game over. I am wiped out. That was an exhausting game to watch, and the commercials didn't do nearly enough to keep me entertained. Thanks for hanging out with us here, everyone! We can keep discussing the game, post-game, commercials, whatever in the comments as long as you like.

Staci

Wow they're really going the family angle. Has it been really been two years since the wadrobe malfunction?

Mrs. Davis

Hi Staci! Yeah, at least 2, maybe 3. I'm loving the circus stuff.

Staci

I'm impressed that they're keeping with it.

The circus stuff amazes me. Probably because if I ever attempted any of it, I'd be in a body cast!

Staci

I'm somewhat conflicted on who to root for.

I was born in Chicago, but the Colts used to be in Baltimore and I grew up in Maryland.

Charlene

I never expected a Super Bowl commercial would make me cry, but here I am sniffling away after seeing all of the families!

Charlene

I live and work in the Chicago suburbs, and we had a Super Bowl tailgate party at work on Friday. Someone brought in a video of the '86 Super Bowl, and it was amazing how small those guys looked compared to the players today - even the Fridge.

Mrs. Davis

Charlene, did you watch the Superbowl shuffle?

Charlene

We had the tape, but we never got around to watching it. I really thought this year's team would do a remake.

Amanda

Hey, everybody!

Mrs. Davis

Amanda!

Charlene

I liked that. To me there are certain songs that you just don't mess with, and that was a pretty straight rendition of the national anthem.

Charlene

Amanda, who are you rooting for?

Amanda

I'm rooting for the Colts, b/c I'm in MD, and they used to be a Baltimore team. Also, I used to live in Indiana. And Peyton Manning is a sweetheart who deserves a Superbowl win.

Also, dudes: I'm kind of hosting a little shindig, so when my guest (singular) gets here, I may have to take my leave of you for a while, but I'll keep checking in. Yay, I love the Superbowl.

Charlene

No way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amanda

Holy shit. Not a good start Indy.

Amanda

Y'all, the city of Chicago just exploded.

Ceej

Whoo-Hoo! And I don't even likey football!

Charlene

Yeah, I'm surprised I'm not hearing celebratory gunfire or something!

Amanda

Charlene: I lived in Baltimore when the Ravens were in the Superbowl, and there was all kinds of celebratory gunfire. Which was kinda hard to tell from the usual, run-of-the-mill variety we were so used to.

Charlene

Urlacher is SOOO hot!

Charlene

Actually, where I live it's usually fireworks instead of gunfire. (Or at least that's what I tell myself!) But I'll keep my ears open!

Staci

Rule #1 in Baltimore: Don't go outside of the Inner Harbor/Fells Point area

Amanda

I love me some Brett Favre and Tom Brady. One is a Southern gentleman; the other is a Yankee gentleman. Both are hot, but I kinda wish Brady would stop getting the Flowbee haircuts. Dude makes enough money to get it styled properly, is all I'm sayin.

Staci

Nicely done

Amanda

Staci: No doubt. I was in Mt. Vernon, but on the edge. Actually, there are a few insulated neighborhoods that are nice, but they're usually surrounded by scary parts.

Staci

That Bud Light commercial was funny

Charlene

Can't wait for halftime. I love me some Prince!

Staci

Thankfully its only happened to me once. It just took me 45 minutes to get out of it!

callistawolf

The Colts have gotta be hatin' it.

Charlene

I think my downstairs neighbors are burning their tuna casserole. Not a good smell!

Amanda

yay! i heart peyton

callistawolf

Way to come back there, Colts! Methinks I spoke too soon!

Staci

WOW!!!!!!

Charlene

Good for them. Even though I live in the Chicago area, I really won't be too sad if the Colts win.

callistawolf

Bud light commercial was pretty funny. :) Love the Doritos commercial though.

Staci

Holy shit!!! This is going to be an interesting game!

callistawolf

Omg, this is a circus.

Mrs. Davis

Very interesting game! And slippery.

Charlene

That Snickers ad was stupid.

Charlene

They could be playing in the balmy Chicago weather. It's a toasty zero degrees right now.

callistawolf

Agreed about the snickers commercial. Bleh.

callistawolf

Letterman and Oprah = LOL!

Amanda

Oprah and Dave! Love it.

callistawolf

Turnover central. Damp much?

Amanda

fumble and recovery!

Charlene

Poor little Rex gets no respect.

callistawolf

Coke commercial: strange but also strangely good.

callistawolf

LOVE the dog commercial for bud.

Charlene

I don't think it's you, Mrs. Davis. I'm hoping they're just saving the really good ones for later.

callistawolf

I liked the career builder commercial pretty well. :) Chevy has some good ones, but overall I'm feeling pretty meh.

Kathy

Thought I might as well pop in so I'm not a silent "lurker."
I LOVE your blog/liveblog! I could barely tell you who's playing today (I'm from NJ, live in LA, no allegiances here) but your blog is keeping me tuned in. I agree - loved the dog commercial, esp. when dog kisses girl. And, I'm humbled to say that the Chevy HHR also hit my funnybone.
Game? I'm working during the game, tuning in for the commercials...

Amanda

these cameramen are having problems in this rain.

Amanda

Mrs. Davis: Cybil Shepherd AND Barbara Wahwah.

Mrs. Davis

Hi Kathy! thanks for popping in!

Tracey

sorry i'm so late to the party guys, but OH MY GOD, WHO KNEW THE SUPER BOWL WAS SO FUCKING GAY?!?! i mean, the commercials??!? like, woah, man. i'm half expecting some man-on-man action during the next break, for reals.

Mrs. Davis

OMG, tracey, you are right! They seem to flip back and forth from being really gay to being really homophobic. Eeek.

callistawolf

I couldn't put my finger on it, till you said it, Tracey. What the heck is up with that??

Tracey

i seriously think they are honestly playing to a gay audience. apparently the super bowl attracts a large gay male audience, which the advertisers clearly recognize if these commercials are any indication....

ahmielyn

It's true about the gayness. That first Ford commercial had for a spokesperson the guy who played Emmitt's gay football lover on Queer As Folk.

Kathy

Thanks, Mrs. Davis!
Great Coke commercial...makes me want to go out and get a tattoo? Well, maybe/not...But, it made me laugh, and it was memorable.

Amanda

Who watches all these CSI shows? I don't know anyone who does, and there are like 8 diff't versions of the CSI show.

Amanda

Ok, which songs is Prince gonna do?

Kiss
When Doves Cry
Purple Rain would kick ass for obvious reasons

ahmielyn

I = total CSI junkie. All 3 flavors.

callistawolf

The way the game started, I never would have predicted a tied game at the half, but the Colts ahead? That's just a testament to how insane this game has been so far.

callistawolf

With every plug for the halftime show, if they don't play "Let's Go Crazy" I'm going to be disappointed. LOL!

Amanda

dude's name is shannon: there's a gay thing there.

"it's all about ball security." also gay.

Charlene

Here we go! I hope Prince doesn't get electrocuted.

ahmielyn

He's going to be awesome. I saw him on the Musicology tour, and it was easily the best show ever.

callistawolf

See? Let's Go Crazy! :)

ahmielyn

But for real? The head wrap? He looks like Aunt Jemima.

Amanda

My husband called it: "Dearly Beloved."

And that hair thing? I got one thing to say about that: "Lucy! You got some 'splaining to do!"

callistawolf

The heck? It sounds like that song he did for Batman, but now its Proud Mary??

Kathy

With today's weather, hope he sings "Purple Rain"...

ahmielyn

I love him. I LOVE him.

Amanda

My husband hates the Grambling State band thing. He's in hell right now.

Amanda

Good for him for wearing the waterproof mascara.

Amanda

where's apollonia?

Kathy

This music brings me back to my college days...
My hair's the same color/length as his backup dancers, so for one split second I imitated their dancing. My husband loved it, my son is still disturbed. I'm threatening to get the PTA moms to do it at the next high school assembly...my children sometimes have no sense of humor...

ahmielyn

I've got some respect for those girls shaking their asses in high, high heels on the slickery stage.

callistawolf

PURPLE RAIN! Friggin AWESOME!

Charlene

This one's for you, Kathy!

ahmielyn

Is it wrong that I find him incredibly hot? Disturbing, yes, but wrong?

Charlene

Ahmielyn, if it's wrong, I don't wanna be right!

ahmielyn

The gayness of the guitar shadow! That's quite an, uh, instrument you have there.

Kathy

Woohoo!
