MamaPop Recommends: Kelly's Picks For June

Hey you! Be sure to submit your own recommendations over at MamaPopTalk!

Cece Peniston - "Finally." Why? Because it's fabulous in that early 90s, mainstream dance music kind of way. I sing loud when I hear this song, which is unfortunate for just about anybody around but too bad. Video here. Oh, the bellbottom revival. What a weird time it was.

Recommended Book or Publication:
Love Saves the Day
by Tim Lawrence is a really fascinating look at the birth of club culture, DJ culture, and the emergence of gay culture into the mainstream. I really, really wish I could have been at these early discotheques in New York...but then I'd be even older than I am now. Anyway, very interesting book on a very interesting subculture. Check it out, even if you're averse to all things dance, club, DJ, and/or gay.

Recommended TV Show:
The Universe on the History Channel is like the ultimate reality show. It covers most of what we know about the universe, which is just so frighteningly little, and tackles a few questions as best as it can. It will definitely leave you with that, "The universe, man. The fuckin' universe," feeling of bewilderment. I'm also going to bite Tracey's style and say "anything HBO." I haven't been able to get into Flight of the Conchords but practically every series that this network fosters is amazing. The combination of amazing writers, directors, and actors that they snag is unreal. I can see the appeal, though. If you want to do something more in-depth than a 2-hour movie but don't want to deal with the creative constraints of a network, HBO will help you out. As a result, in the past 10 years we've seen The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Big Love, Deadwood, OZ, The Wire, Entourage, Carnivale, Lucky Louie, and now John from Cincinnati. It's amazing. They'll give anything a chance. But hey HBO! Bring back Lucky Louie, dammit!

Recommended Movie:
In the same vein of all things universe and mind-bendy, I recommend to you The Fountain. Darren Aronofsky, of Pi and Requiem for a Dream fame, struggled to get this movie made for several years. It's a very odd film and not one that is easy to describe. It takes different perspectives on time, morality, and love...meaty topics to be sure. But it's a beautiful and moving film and the last scenes will leave you breathless with their visual and emotional beauty. It's on DVD, so buy it or rent it or something.

Recommended Other Random Thing:
The Laundry Spa Special Stain Remover is a total miracle. Pour some of this special liquid on your garments or sheets after one of those $*&$*%@ period stains occurs and watch the magic. Fresh stains take only a few minutes to be eradicated, but the stain remover can be applied to old stains and will remove most if not all of the stain if left to sit overnight. Seriously, this stuff must have been made with fairy dust. There's no earthly explanation for it. It's a little pricey, yes, but I've had my bottle for over a year and it's so worth it. Besides, it's cheaper than buying new underwear and sheets, right?

Amanda

I will definitely check out that stain remover, because my husband's white t-shirts have some, uh, pit yellowing that the OxyClean simply won't touch.
