MamaPop Recommends: Sweetney's Picks For September

Mprecs_2

Recommended Book: The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. One of my favorite books of all time, I re-read it this month with our own Kelly (whose throat I practically forced it down). It's a story of epic family dysfunction composed of raucous humor and stunning pathos -- a virtuoso, and perhaps once-in-a-lifetime, work of brilliance.

The Corrections tells a spellbinding story with sexy comic brio, and evokes a quirky family akin to Anne Tyler's, only bitter. Franzen's great at describing Christmas homecomings gone awry, cruise-ship follies, self-deluded academics, breast-obsessed screenwriters, stodgy old farts and edgy Tribeca bohemians equally at sea in their lives, and the mad, bad, dangerous worlds of the Internet boom and the fissioning post-Soviet East.

You know those rare books that you postpone finishing simply because you don't want it to end? This is one of those. If you haven't read it, you should, and fast.

Recommended Song: Manchester Orchestra, Wolves at Night. They bring the rock. Plus, you know, the flip-flops. (snort.)

Recommended Blog: I Am Bossy. My fixation on this woman is reaching stalker-ish levels (Oh hai, Georgia!). She's whip-smart, funny, sassy, and completely devoid of bullshit -- four of my favoritest things! Someday I hope she'll realize we're meant to be together and run off with me to Mexico (OLE!), but until then I'll remain just an avid -- and creepy! let's not forget creepy! -- reader.

Recommended TV Show: Californication. I was dubious at first -- particularly after watching the first episode of the show and finding little in David Duchovny's protagonist to connect with -- but sticking with it over the past few weeks I've become a convert, as they've slowly fleshed out all the characters into complex, 3-D humanity. Oh and as a bonus, Duchovny still manages to bring the Eye Candy Factor post-Mulder... in case you were, you know, wondering. cough.

Recommended Other Thing: The start of the school year. Ohmygod y'all, WE MADE IT! Now that the burden of summer childcare is over, it's back to eating bon-bons and drinking champagne throughout the day! WOOT! heh.

Suzy Q

Thanks for reminding me about The Corrections. You're not the first person to say to me that it's a great book. I have it in my closet, I've been meaning to read it, and I just keep forgetting. I'm almost done with the book I'm reading now, so that's next!
