"Get Smart" Review

Getsmart08 The other night I had a conversation that went something like this:

"On Saturday we went to see Get Smart"

"Oh, I saw it last night"

"How did you like it?!"

"I thought it was good! It was funny!" (I really did find it good! and funny!)

"Well it was just like the T.V. show"

"..." crickets "..."

"It was a weekly show that we grew up with. Agent 99 and Agent 86. Just like you have Law and Order each week we had Get Smart"

"Oh yeah! I think I read about it on Wikipedia"

So forgive me for my incredulousness due to age. Also forgive me for using Wikipedia as a valid source of information ike it's CNN or something. That said I really did read that Get Smart had been a television show and had not been aware until hitting up the always trusty and accurate Wikipedia. I think I was too attempting to wrap my head around Steve "Michael Scott" Carell and Anne "Second string to Meryl Streep" Hathaway being in an action movie. Like with guns and things blowing up and comedic timing that holds the essence of the relationship between bumbling Maxwell Smart (Carell) to the tame and hot Agent 99 (Hathaway) that had made the television show such a success.

Let's just say that the two did it and they did it well with Carell superbly funny and charming as always as Maxwell Smart; a brilliant analyst in the top secret Control who aspires to be a field agent. And Hathaway being the successful but once disgraced Agent 99 to be his partner as the two go on a path to find nuclear weapons in Russia. And that there is the entire premise; a well meaning geek and super hotty are secret agents fighting crime. I have no doubt in the talent of either because as far as I'm concerned Steve Carell can do no wrong but I was wary of the chemistry and all that KABOOM stuff since it really isn't his typical bag. Yet he does it well and the chemistry with Hathaway is just as it should be; a little off kilter but with a lot of charm and obvious hilarities ensue. And might I add that I am now off to see if I can find tidbits from the original show. Geeks saving the world; something I am totally down with.

Peeved Michelle

Christ. How old are you? I am only 33 and I watched reruns of that show when I was a kid. (Now that I went and checked out the Wikipedia entry, I realize they were probably showing reruns around the time of the Get Smart movie that came out in the '80s.) Still, way to make a girl feel old.

I'm only 22 and I knew it was a tv show! I've never seen it, and have absolutely no knowledge of what it was about, but I did know it existed.

It was a really funny TV show! I liked the movie, but thought it moved a little slow in spots. I used to like the fast pace of the TV show, the puns/jokes went by really quick, you had to pay attention to get all of them.

Geez, I'm 20 and I love the show. I haven't seen it in YEARS but that doesn't mean I don't love it.

I also adore the movie, but for different reasons.

In response to the 'OMG How old are you?/How did you not know this was a show?' questions:

I am 24.

I just never saw the show and only had some vague knowledge of its existence. I hadn't really thought about it until the movie came out.

This reminds me of the other day when my roommate asked me what 'LOST' was.

Oh good, I'm so glad to see people in the comments near my age (28) used to love it in the reruns, too. I was afraid I was the only one! I was addicted to Nick at Nite growing up!

Get Smart looks pretty good over all though it seems like Steve Carell is veering toward an excess of slapstick humor
