An Independent Film Company Is Whatchu Whatchu Whatchu WANT (whatchu want)

Adam_yauch

Adam Yauch, known to many as MCA of the Beastie Boys, has already proved his mettle in the areas of hip hop, indie record labels, magazines, and activism. But now he's throwing himself into the world of independent film with a new division of his company, Oscilloscope.

Yauch has experience directing many of the Beasties' music videos and in 2008 he directed Gunnin' for That #1 Spot, a documentary about high school basketball players. With the indie film division, Yauch hopes to stick to strict DIY ethics. Oscilloscope employees will handle all of the details, including poster design, marketing, and picking theatres for screenings.

Yauch is aware that now isn't the best time for independent film. Financial situations being what they are, finding support and distribution for smaller, quirkier films is next to impossible. But Yauch is committed to doing what he can to see that quality films see at least some of the appreciation that they deserve.

Oscilloscope has two promising films in the pipeline: Flow, "a documentary about global water problems" (which I can't find a link for) and Wendy and Lucy, a movie about a young woman whose financial situation goes completely to shit (oh hai!) and stars Michelle Williams.

I have very high hopes for Yauch's latest venture. While drooling over expensive DVDs on the Criterion site the other day, I came across Yauch's Top Ten Criterions. He and I are kindred spirits, as his top ten includes Rushmore, The Harder They Come, and The Life Aquatic.
