How Procrastination Gave me the Final Word on 2008

While my fellow Mamapoppers were regaling you all week with their top picks of 2008 I sat at my computer paralyzed. I mean, coming up with a list conveys that in some way my opinion matters. Knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are going to be logging on and reading what rocked my world this year was just too daunting. So I procrastinated. And then I realized that you’re just here trying to get the latest scoop on Speidi and couldn’t give a monkey’s butt what I think. Then it became really easy to write.

So without further ado or numbers--

Britney’s Big Comeback
Britney has come a long way since January when she was getting regular rides from ambulance drivers and barred from seeing her children to finishing out the year with liberal visitation rights, snapping her body back into enviable shape and releasing her latest album “Circus.” Dare I say this Pop Princess deserves the title of Comeback Queen?

Sarah Silverman is f**king Matt Damon

My Summer Fling with Swingtown
This groovy summer series was not renewed, but the show was about far more than key parties and orgies. The larger theme highlighted the women’s movement and the sexual revolution of the 70’s which made this series a lot more than a showcase for double blend polyester suits and porno ‘stashes.

Politics as Unusual
This real-life drama was far better than anything playing in the theaters this year. It had everything--Old vs. Young. Black vs. White. Crazy Pageant Queens and a Plumber who was in no way qualified to act as a political mouthpiece or, as it turns out, a plumber.

But mostly I loved the election because of the halo effect it had on television. SNL became funny and relevant for a little while and it was like a sharpening stone for the rapier wits of Jon Stewart (and Company) and Colbert Report.

Oh, and let’s not forget that by electing our first black president Americans proved to the world, and ourselves, that we are capable of coming together and changing our ways. Yay us.

It’s a Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay World
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention two of our favorite celebs who emerged from the closet this year: Lindsey Lohan and Clay Aiken.

And, for what seemed like a blink of an eye gay marriage became legal in California this year. Celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, George Takai, and Wanda Sykes tied the knot and put famous faces to the gay rights movement. And then, just as quickly, those rights were taken away. I hope that when I’m writing this list next year Prop 8 will be but a distant memory, like Oprah’s Big Give.

Rock of Love 2:
Every Daisy has its thorn.

Gone. But Not Forgotten (My favorite shows that died this year)
Carpoolers, The Riches, Dirt, Jericho, Dirty Sexy Money, Lipstick Jungle, Men in Trees and Swingtown (see above).
