Obama Begins, Get Your War On Ends

Gywofinal1

Amidst all of the happiness and optimism surrounding yesterday's inauguration comes a bittersweet moment: the very last Get Your War On strip.

Cartoonist David Rees started the strip shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The formula was simple: stark clip art images of office workers, a critical eye on the Bush administration, and hilarious, biting sarcasm. The strip quickly gained wild popularity on the internet and provided a voice that served to express the frustrations of many Americans and a somewhat lighthearted avenue during a very, very dark time.

The strip was soon picked up by Rolling Stone and several books of GYWO strips have been published. It has also been adapted into a stage play and an animated series.

Now that the sun has finally set on the Bush presidency, Rees has decided to retire the strip. I'm sure he does not do so out of the belief that War Is Over If Obama Wants It or that we will no longer experience the baffling clusterfucks inherent in American politics, but perhaps that beautifully simple image of an empty desk represents a slight but hugely significant reduction in frustration and hopelessness.

We must never stop questioning or being critical and in many ways President Obama will be held to even higher standards than Bush was since he is the president, of the two, who is supposed to understand more, to care more. But perhaps our criticisms will be heard now.
