Will Ferrell to Channel W One Last Time

Ferrell_as_bush

I am not a HUGE fan of Will Ferrell and I'm REALLY not a fan of George W. Bush. But as the Bush years finally (FINALLY) come to a close, I find myself looking back on W's daffiness with some degree of fond remembrance. Not in a, "What a great President that dude was," but in more of a, "Holy shit, that dude was President. Twice. Just look at him doing that...not giving a fuck thing he does. We elected that dude. Drugs!" And I will genuinely miss Ferrell's dead-on impersonation of the dude. Ferrell was born to play him and he will get one last chance to don the camel-toe-inducing flight suit and trip over words with more than 1.5 syllables.

Ferrell will Bush on Broadway in a show called You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush. The show will run at Cort Theatre from February 5 to March 15 and will also air live on HBO, though the date for that has not yet been determined. You're Welcome will serve as a humorous biography (and really, what other kind of biography can one have for W?) recapping Bush's madcap adventures since his days at Yale.

Kaiser at Celebitchy hits the nail on the head by writing, "he’s the only comedian to really give the 'character' of Bush the needed pathos, snark, silliness and oblivion." Impersonations are supposed to be exaggerated, that's the whole point. But Bush does such a good job of exaggerating his own persona, that all Ferrell had to do was add a few silly jokes here and there and perfect his mannerisms. It's uncanny, frankly.

Get thee to the latest Vanity Fair (Cate Blanchett cover) for the "oral history of the Bush Administration"... a massive piece culling quotes for years and years of interviews with all kinds of insiders chopped up to all our favorite Bush-era events (the recount, 9/11, Iraq, Katrina) in chron order. Unreal. Amazing. Disgusting.

It will go down in history, this impersonation.

When we were in the midst of his ridiculous presidency it was easy to laugh at his stupid antics at first, but then it always made me feel a little sick to my stomach, because that idiot was running our country. Now, though, we can just giggle. We made it through the last eight years, and we may be in bad shape, but at least we've still got a bit of comedy to watch.
