Feels Like the First Time: Reliving Your Cultural Watershed Moments

Eternal_sunshine_of_the_spotless_mind The AV Club has another fantastic and thought-provoking, loosely list-based article that asks its writers and readers to list "Things we want to experience again for the first time."

The prompt is simple and, of course, elicits many interesting responses. Among the AV Club staffers, I nodded emphatically at those who mentioned wanting to see The Wire and Reservoir Dogs and hearing Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" again for the first time. I also get to steal a few moments from people, particularly Sean O'Neal who wishes he could see Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV show) again. I've never watched it, mostly for the exact same reason that O'Neal was a latecomer: the promos made it look like the cheesiest thing ever. And though, by now, I've heard lots of testimonials to the contrary, I still haven't gotten around to diving into the series. It's definitely on my list, though.

As you could probably guess by the image I have with this post, I really wish I could see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind again. That movie blew. my. mind. I loved how it looked and felt, I loved the story, I loved the characters, and I LOVED how much the relationship between Joel and Clementine punched me in the gut. Their wretched flaws, their glorious moments of happiness...and just the notion of how, when you've been with someone for a long time and you reach your lowest point, if you could end it all, how you could never really end it. And I loved how almost everyone I talk to about it sees it differently, just like everyone experiences love and heartache differently. Some thought that movie was very hopeful, some thought it was utterly pessimistic.

For purely, "Whoa, WTF?" reasons, I would like to see Fight Club again for the first time. I didn't read the book before seeing the film and when the big twist was revealed my brain spasmed. Also, this:

Goood NIGHT.

I'm trying to think of what music and books I would like to relive anew. While I'm working on that, what pieces of pop culture would you like to experience for the first time again?

steff

my so-called life. i can remember where i was when i saw the first episode. i can remember when people were trying to petition to get it back on the air. i can remember when MTV was still cool and played a marathon of the show and you could request your fav episode to play (boiler room, obv). i can also remember having to be home to watch it at the moment that it aired bc there were no dvrs and watching a crappy "taped" version just isn't the same. that show changed EVERYTHING for me as a young person.

Keli

Memento. That movie blew my mind.

Also, the first season of Veronica Mars and the first few seasons of the X-Files. (David Duchovny = hot).

Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez again. Especially Chronicle of the Death Foretold.

Velocity Girl - I still love them to this day, but I was in love when I heard Sarah Shannon's voice for the first time - *sigh* (total girl crush on her).

Pulp Fiction - having not had experience with Tarantino films prior, the twists, turns, and links were awesome!

Harry Potter- love the books, loved becoming immersed into such a great imaginary world (and still secretly wish I was a witch and not a muggle).

Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat - Love her books and discovering her characters in the first book and then truly discovering Lestat in the second make them some of my all-time favorites.

Renee

Sifl & Olly, because I want to be shocked by genius again. And Pirates of Caribbean, because it really did feel magical that first time.

The first Jurassic Park movie - just the wonder of seeing the brontosauruses (brontosauri?)so big and so lifelike. It was magical. And the T-Rex scene.

And reading the first Harry Potter book.

K.

Pans Labyrinth, probably the best film I've ever seen. If you haven't seen this film yet... Wow. I'm almost envious. Do it. (warning: it sounds fairytale-ish, there is a child on the cover, but do not, under any circumstances, watch it with a child. But you do need someones hand to squeeze and shoulder to cry on.)

Astrid Lindgrens books, particularly Mio, my Mio.

My So Called Life was the best show ever! The boiler room was my fav episoe and now I am going to have to make this weekend Easter/My So Called life marathon. Also, I cannot tell you how many time we talk about how great Jordan Cattalono looks when he "leans" he is a great leaner :)

I didn't start watching Buffy until Season 7, and I do wish I could go back and start watching it from the beginning. I also wish I had watched Firefly from the beginning; maybe if more of us had, it wouldn't have been cancelled after only 1 season.

I wish I could go back to like 2000 and pay closer attention to music, there are so many artists I have never heard of but that I wish I was familiar with. If that makes sense.

I wish I could go back and see Firefly when it first aired, as well as catch the lightning in a bottle that was when the BSG miniseries first aired. I didn't do either, and now I am full of regret over it.

Other things I would love to experience for the first time a second time:
Heathers (movie)
World War Z (book)
Dead Like Me (tv)
Carnivale (tv)
Farscape (tv)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (book)
Animal Farm (book)
The Misanthrope (play)
The Silence of the Lambs (movie)
My So Called Life (tv)
Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine
Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes
Depeche Mode's 101 & Songs of Faith & Devotion
Jeff Buckley's Grace

There are so many pop culture things I would love to relive over and over again!

LovelyLayla

Lost - I remember watching the first episode of the show, and just being completely scared, confused, and wanting more. I didn't sleep that night, because I watched the entire first and second season the whole way through.
Jurassic Park - I actually remember the moment my dad called me to his room and told me about this book his was reading about a man who created dinosaurs, and how it was going to be a movie. Reading the book and seeing the movie, both amazing.
The Painted Veil - Watch it. You will understand.
The Dark Knight - I don't know how to explain it properly.
Dido No Angel
Abbey Road
Rent - seeing it live on Broadway
Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney live.
The Princess Bride.

Brandi

Definitely Lost. There were so many WTF episodes that left me lying awake at night...if only I could go back...

When I heard first chords of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in 1991, on college radio.

It was such a freaking relief, after having had to hear either hair bands like Poison or crap rap like Vanilla Ice, to be able to hear something with heart again. I remember feeling like things might get better.

Also, seeing Office Space IN THE THEATER the opening weekend. That was a smart decision.
