Holy Hellmouth: A Buffy Movie Without Whedon? WHAT?

Buffy-Whedon-movie Okay, somebody, anybody, please: tell me that today is April 1st. Seriously. It's April Fools, right? And this news that there's going to be a Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie with NO involvement of Joss Whedon and NO use of secondary (secondary?!?) characters like Willow and Xander and ANGEL and SPIKE is an epic April Fools joke, right? RIGHT?

*gropes for smelling salts*

Star Trek without William Shatner is one thing. Buffy without Joss is quite another. Buffy without Joss is like the Catholic Church without the Pope - no, without St. Peter - it is Christianity without Jesus, it is ALL OF CREATION without GOD.

*deep breath*

So, the movie's being made by Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original Buffy movie (conceived and written by Whedon), and who, with her husband, helped Whedon get the TV series off the ground. They've held onto the rights to Buffy since the beginning. And now, presumably, they see an opportunity to make some use of those rights. They do not, however, have any intention of building on the narrative that Whedon established in the TV series.

"The new "Buffy" film... would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Kuzui and Vertigo are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon.

One of the underlying ideas of "Buffy" allows the filmmakers to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential."

Okay, so, FINE: I get the logic of starting from scratch and developing another Slayer story. But WITHOUT JOSS WHEDON? For the love of the Powers That Be, WHY?

I would probably go see this movie - out of professional curiosity of course - but I wouldn't like it. I;m telling you now, Kuzui! I WILL NOT LIKE IT.

So there.

(Via Elisa, who ruined my morning with this news. THANKS.)

I'd be ok with a vampire slayer movie - like something from Tales of the Slayers, using the same mythology but with a whole different slayer. But not BtVS movie, not without Joss. That's just wrong.

Tanis Miller

This day just has just sunk to a spectacular new low.

And I just stubbed my damn toe.

Her Bad Mother

Agreed, totally - a new narrative, new slayer, FINE.

No Joss? NOT FINE.

And I thought it couldn't get worse after the prop8 ruling... *sigh* stupid Tuesday

I cannot take this news today. I just can't. *dissolves in snotty sobs*

Snarky Amber

Seriously, how does Kazui expect this movie to be successful if she's going to completely ignore the fan base that made her flop movie into TV history? You can't do a Buffy movie without Whedon writing and Whedon characters without pissing off a rabid fan base. Learn to movie, Fran.

Ok, this did it for me: "...Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original Buffy movie." Uh - the first Buffy movie SUCKED. The show ROCKED. Ergo, Fran's idea of doing a second movie without Joss SUCKS.

File this under: "worst ideas ever"

I swear Hollywood needs trolls that run around screaming "BAD IDEA!!!" whenever some shit like this comes up.

Disturbing beyond words!! Sign me up for the riots.

"Learn to movie, Fran."

This is one of the best things I've read all day.

Exactly right!

Blasphemy, plain and simple.

Buffy without Joss is like cake without ice cream. It just hain't right.

A movie about vampire slayers in general? Sure. I'm sure Joss is way too busy shooting Dollhouse to work on a screenplay, so if he said no thanks, then okay then. Look at how many Bond movies have been made with different actors playing Bond. Just playing devil's advocate here.

HOWEVER, me personally? I feel differently about the Buffy franchise than I do about the Bond franchise, for example. Someone else cannot be Buffy Summers to me. If the Kuzui's want to make Susie the Vampire Slayer, that's fine and dandy. But Buffy will always be SMG to me.

WTF? Let's just slap a big FAIL on this idea and step slowly away from it.

Buffy without Whedon? Joss IS Buffy. And no Scoobies? No Angel? No Spike? (Does, perhaps, Joss own the last two characters per chance?)

Little Frannie obviously doesn't know much about the Buffyverse if she thinks she can reimagine it sans just about everything that made it so utterly awesome to begin with. Next thing you know, Buffy will be played by Miley Cyrus or something. (shudder)

This just sucks.

Catching in on the Twilight phenomenon much?

Her Bad Mother

I actually don't care all that much if they make a movie about a new slayer. Bit it HAS to be a character in the BUFFYVERSE and it HAS to be done by Whedon.

The comparison would be if a Bond movie was done without Bond or Q or M OR a British Secret Service or even a freaking BRITAIN. It would just be a dumb old spy movie with no personality. Like Austin Powers, played straight.

You realize the original movie was done with Joss, right? And the show was done (partly) with the Kuzuis? The Whedon/Kuzui batting averages are, alas, identical.

That said, I agree with the whole "no Joss, no Buffy" thing. I mean, my GOD.

Dear Fran and Kaz,

Someone with a sense of artistic integrity

Leslie in Toronto

Dammit Ang - you took the words from my brain :)

Who thunk this would be a good idea????

Her Bad Mother

Except that the projects (the series) that had the better averages were the ones where Joss had creative control. 1st Movie = less Joss = more suck. TV Series = more Joss = NO suck. 2nd Movie (wait for it) = No Joss = ALL SUCK.

What I really don't get is why they don't just make another vampire movie? It can be a "vampire hunter" movie or something. But to use the Buffy name? The vampire slayer mythos? Without Joss or any characters from the show? What the heck is the point besides being too lazy to creatively come up with something different and trying to create new branding?

I just can't even stand the thought of this. It's not right!
