Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Concert to Air on PBS

Pete_seeger Folk music hero Pete Seeger turned 90 yesterday and was celebrated with a concert at Madison Square Garden. The concert featured such heavyweights as Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Tom Morello, and Ani DiFranco and the proceeds went to benefit the Hudson River preservation organization, Clearwater.

PBS recorded the concert and will air it late this summer.

M.J. Rosenberg of Talking Points Memo noted a very cool aspect of last night's concert. President Barack Obama sent a letter to Seeger that was read aloud at the concert, congratulating Seeger on his milestone birthday and all of his accomplishments in life. Any time Obama was mentioned, the crowd of over 30,000 attendees went nuts. Despite much hand-wringing over Obama's supposed radical socialist beliefs, he's not quite the harbinger of Red Doom that some might make him out to be. However, it is cool to see people on this side of the spectrum having a president that is at least an alright start.

Seeger has long been the voice of many causes, including civil rights, feminism, environmentalism, labor rights, and peace. On a personal note, I got to meet Pete Seeger about 15 years ago. Choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett created a ballet, Ballad of You and Me, set to his music for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Seeger attended the premiere and a reception which I was able to attend because I was a student at the PBT school at the time. We obviously didn't talk that much, but it was very cool to bump elbows with such a legend.

Happy Birthday, Pete! Here's one of my favorite songs that he often performed. His sister Peggy actually wrote it about a spunky young girl who bucks traditional gender roles of the time and works to fulfill her dream of becoming an engineer.

Fans of the show Weeds might recognize this one:
