Pee-Wee Herman Returning to the Stage

Pee-wee-herman Years before Pee-Wee's Playhouse took a prominent place in the Saturday morning roster of children's programs on CBS, the Playhouse characters performed their antics for a live audience at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles.

Paul Reubens, the man behind Pee-Wee Herman, will revive the stage show for a limited engagement in Hollywood.

The original stage show was filmed and broadcast by HBO in 1981. My family had HBO when cable first became available in our area in the early 80s and so I managed to see the show when I was pretty young. It was childish enough to captivate me and the more mature humor went over my head.

When Reubens adapted the stage show for children's programming, I was an immediate devotee, thrilled to see Pee-Wee and Jambi and Miss Yvonne every week. This was, of course, before the days of DVR and even widespread availability of VCRs and the like, so if you missed the airing of the original on HBO, there was no way of knowing when you might see it again.

Questionable legal troubles aside, Reubens' Pee-Wee characters were wildly creative and deliciously surreal. I sincerely hope that the revival will appear on HBO, as well.

"Today's word of the day is 'delightful.' When you hear today's word of the day, scream real loud!"

Ah, Pee Wee; what great memories!

Alyssa S.

I have 4 DVD's of the Saturday morning version that have several shows on each DVD & my 4 y.o. daughter watches them over-and-over-and-over. My husband teased me when I originally bought them, but I LOVED the show, and now my kids do too!
