Elton John Attempting To Adopt Ukrainian Toddler

Elton_John Elton John and longtime partner David Furnish are interested in trying to adopt a Ukrainian toddler named Lev they met during an orphanage tour there.  David has wanted to adopt a child for a long time but Elton has been reluctant due to his lifestyle of touring and late nights.

The orphanage houses children whose parents have died of AIDS.  They toured the orphanage and John performed for the children as part of his Elton John's AIDS Foundation work.

His exact quote about what changed his mind is after the jump.

"David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said 'no' because I am 62 and I think because of the traveling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn't be fair for the child," John said.   "But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don't know how we do that but he has stolen my heart.  And he has stolen David's heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I've changed my mind today."

John said he was motivated in part by the sudden death last week of one of his closest friends, keyboardist Guy Babylon.  "It broke my heart because he was such a genius and so young and has two wonderful children," John said. "What better opportunity to replace someone I lost than to replace him with someone I can give a future to."

He also said bureaucratic hurdles may make adoption of a Ukrainian child impossible.  It can't be harder than Madonna's adoption of Mercy.

There's beauty in what he's saying, yet I can't shake the impulsive feeling of it. Like, "I'm not sure how this is going to work, but I really want to do it." However, sometimes that's the only way to make a huge decision like having a child--you have to just jump in.

MaoMao's Mommy

My initial reaction is to roll my eyes when I hear about another celebrity jumping on the adoption bandwagon. BUT, raising awareness about adoption and saving a kid from life in an institution is never a bad thing.

I am always grossed out when people talk about "replacing" people with a child. When my brother died, my dad immediately glommed onto our newborn son and announced that THIS was his buddy now, since his buddy had died, and it skeeved me out that he expected my son, a baby, to replaced HIS son.

I understand that grief makes people say and do irrational things, but it's just...ick. You can't replace a human being.

More likely Elton is feeling his mortality, and wants to stave it off by raising a child, or is realizing he wants to leave a legacy. Or he's just pissed off that Michael Jackson, who was even more weird than Sir Elton, got to have kids and Elton didn't.

Accidental Housewife

Is that really a bad bandwagon to be on???

It depends on the prospective parents' motivations. Are they really wishing to be a parent, to take on the immense responsibility of raising a child--especially a child with special needs--OR are they looking to fill some sort of emotional hole they have? Elton admitted in his statement that "the best way to replace somebody I've lost" was to adopt this child.

I think that's an icky motivation. This child should not be expected to fill a gap in Elton's soul, or heart, or whatever. This child was not put on this earth to make ELTON JOHN feel better about himself, or to help him get over missing a friend.

Adopting because you truly have the calling to be a parent, and to be a parent to a child who needs a home, is wonderful. But adopting a child because you miss a deceased loved one? CREEPY.

And let's face it, we often wonder if those celebrities who go nuts adopting from foreign countries (when there are so many children in our own country needing a home) are just doing it to make themselves feel like philanthropists. Or are they truly following a call in their hearts?

If this little news snippet (and BTW, the Ukraine has stated that John is definitely too old, as is his partner, to adopt from their country) raises awareness of the needs of orphans in the Ukraine, that's great. I just wish sometimes these celebrities would get all teary-eyed about the older children languishing in the U.S. foster care system, who need a permanent home, or older teens with special needs, who aren't as adorable as Madonna's little kids, but who still need love and a permanent home.

Attention all celebrities who would like to adopt children: Please look for a child in your own country first!
