Miss Homeless Belgium, In Which the Losers Remain Homeless

Miss_homeless_belgium The recent Miss Plastic Hungary pageant that required that its contestants have had extensive plastic surgery threw me for a bit of a loop, because it just seems strange to publicly reward women for disliking their own physical appearance. Oh, wait. We do that all the time. North America came up with The Swan, which required that its contestants also be emotionally scarred enough to agree to on-camera therapy beamed into millions of American households, so who am I to judge?

What definitely threw me for a loop is that, right on the heels of Miss Plastic Hungary, it was announced that Therese Van Belle, 58, is the winner of the Miss Homeless Belgium pageant.

Central Europe really seems to get a kick out of singling out women who have already probably suffered a great amount of rejection and then parading them around in sashes to show off what it's done to them.

Miss Homeless Belgium, Therese Van Belle, competed against nine other women through five categories, including one in which the judges weighed their "will to get themselves out of a difficult situation". The lucky Van Belle won a year rent-free in an apartment.

The other contestants, who were apparently quite pleased to have been afforded the luxuries of hot water and the use of electricity for the duration of pageant, were booted back out onto the street once they were deemed as unworthy of shelter, although they seem to have been given some handsome luggage as parting gifts. I guess they didn't, in the words of the event's organizer Aline Duportail, have the "inner strength and determination to get themselves out of their old life and on a new path."

Duportail wanted the competition to put a spotlight on the plight of the homeless, which its public manipulation and judgment of ten women definitely seems to have done in an entirely distasteful fashion. This whole story just gives you a raging case of the warm fuzzies, doesn't it?

UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that Belgium is technically not a part of central Europe but is, by most geographical, political and cultural standards, a western European nation. Knowledge of geography was never my strong point. My apologies for insulting the whole of central Europe, and especially the Czech Republic, because it is the birthplace of such brilliant beers as Pilsner Urquell.

That you tagged this under bullcrap made me lol.

I hope their luggage came with wheels, at least!!

God, I would like to see where I fit on that "will to get themselves out of a difficult situation" scale. How does one even measure something like that?? Is it like a facebook app where your results are dependent on how you answer inane questions such as "When you step in gum do you a) say, damn it all to hell, b) I'll find another shoe on the railroad tracks tomorrow c) you weren't wearing shoes and don't care or d) you think of the gum as just another callous?"

What up Europe!? I think the world has jumped the shark.

This just makes me sick. What's wrong with people that come up with this shit? And WHY are other people watching it?
