Sofía Vergara Makes a Rape Joke On The View, Crickets Ensue

Sofia_vergaraSofía Vergara, 37, was on ABC's The View yesterday morning to talk about her job with the show Modern Family and ended up further entrenching my belief that The View and its guests are in need of some sensitivity training when it comes to rape. First, we had the whole rape-rape/Roman Polanski/Whoopi debacle, and now we have Vergara, our normally beautiful and ever so endearing Vergara, joking about her son being the product of her rape at 13.

Here is how the conversation went on The View's couch yesterday morning, the rape joke being at out 3m55s —

Sherri Shepherd: And also, I think that you are a single mom of a teenage son who is 18! Girl, you look so good!

Sofía Vergara: I know. I cannot lie about my age, because they count, and they, you know...

Joy Behar: You can't.

Sofía Vergara: Yeah, I can't.

Sherri Shepherd: Well, you had him when you were 12.

Sofía Vergara: Yeah, 13. I was raped.

Everyone on The View's couch: [AWKWARD LAUGHTER SPRINKLED LIBERALLY WITH WHAT-THE-HELL-OMIGOD-NOT-AGAIN AND SOME GASPING]

Vergara sure knows how to keep the conversation light and flowing, doesn't she? Whoopi, who knows all too well how this sort of thing goes over, reacted like this, and I don't blame her:

If you do the math, you will know that Vergara's son is not a child of rape, which is why this can somehow be funny? NO. Somehow, age has been so demonized for women in Hollywood that it even crosses people's minds to joke about their children being the products of child-rape to substantiate their youthfulness. Ha ha very funny.

That's just messed up. Damnit. And here, I thought she was so funny and vibrant on the show. This is totally going to taint my feelings toward her acting and her presence on Modern Family. PFFFTTTTTT!

steff

yeah, poor taste times a million. open mouth, insert foot. is she that unfamiliar with the mind to mouth filter? i employ mine CONSTANTLY because so much of the stuff floating in my grey matter should never EVER make it out for public consumption.

I am going to go ahead and defend her. Not that the joke was funny or okay or anything, but I occasionally do a beautiful job of putting my foot in my mouth. I feel sorry for her. BUT I'M GLAD IT WAS AWKWARD.

michele

why is this sht allowed to be aired? that show needs to be pulled off the air forever.

is not funny.

Karen

They air it because they know it will make pop culture news, get people talking, and people will tune it to watch trainwrecks. I've heard some people admit they watch "The View" just to watch how stupid the women on there are. People don't just watch a show because it's good, or because it's noteworthy; they often watch because it's the television equivalent of rubbernecking at a gruesome car accident.

Maybe if people stop talking about this show it will go away.

Doodie

Look, I made a rape Joke here.
This one's acceptable though right?

This is a late comment, but I just now heard about this. I just wanted to say thank you for posting this and saying that people do need sensitivity training. I have PTSD and it seems like it's become such a fad to joke about rape that it's everywhere now and I'm lucky if I go a day without hearing the word used inappropriately/compared to something good. I was afraid that it would spread everywhere, so when I saw that it even happened on The View, I just. . . wow. I'm just glad that I'm not one of the women on The View, because they would have had a screen shot of me looking horrified and probably having a panic attack.
