So A Princess, A Frog, And Barack Obama Walk Into A Bar...

Frog-princess I haven't seen The Princess And The Frog. Yet. I want to see it, because I'm dying to know whether it lives up to its hype (first black Disney princess! best Disney princess story yet! JAZZ! NEW ORLEANS! THIS AIN'T YOUR MAMA'S CINDERELLA!) Also, because - ahem - I like Disney movies, princesses or no, and I like taking my kid to movies, yadda yadda.

But there was a vampire movie that I had to go see first, so.

All of this is to say, I haven't yet any critical commentary to offer on whether or not The Princess And The Frog redeems Disney for its other princess sins, such as they are. But! Newsy.com has pulled together a full video addressing all questions concerning the film and its social and cultural impact and so you can just watch that. And then maybe skip the movie altogether, unless you happen to like princesses, in which case it maybe doesn't matter to you whether Newsy thinks that there's a relationship between the election of Barack Obama and Disney's decision to release a movie featuring an African American princess, you're just going to see that movie anyway because, princesses, pretty pretty princesses!

Anyway:

Make of that what you will.

Catherine also blogs as Her Bad Mother. Which, yeah, you know you want some of that.

I've gotta say, that whole "other-species" comment struck me immediately when I first heard about this movie. But, as I hadn't seen it I wanted to reserve judgment... still haven't seen it. So, any who has seen it — tell me... just how much of the movie does this girl spend being a frog compared to being an alleged role model for young black girls?

Eh, I'll be seeing this because I have one girl who LOVES movies, and another who LOVES princesses. I'm glad to see a princess who isn't "typical" but then I felt that way about Mulan too. My girls love Sasha and Malia and chat about them as if they were just down the block. I'm sure this will be no different for them.

My niece is 3.5 yo has blond hair and blue eyes and is in LOVE with Princess Tiana. I don't know about older children, but I think this will be great for very young girls because currently they don't even realize she is different, but when they get older they will see her as part of the princess set and never realize it was ever a big deal.

Like the rest, I haven't seen the movie, but with little girls, the movie doesn't really matter as much as the toys and marketing. And the true measure of whether he is in the princess "cannon" will only be able to be measured how much they promote her on the shelves. (I don't see nearly as many Jasmine or Mulan Dolls...)

Sorry for the typo...I didn't mean to say "he"
