Glee to be big in Japan?

GleepanGlee is going to be showing up overseas soon. Specifically in Japan. Fox Japan is, understandably excited about this. Here's a show that has made them a lot of money (not only in ad revenue but those songs sell like hotcakes, the show pays for itself every week, easily) and now has a chance to make them even more money. It's the little show that could. So how does Fox Japan decide to celebrate / announce this? With a video of course.

Starring ex-Sumo great Akebono Tarō, that was... it really was, wasn't it? Glee in Japan. Now I am going to assume they will have to subtitle the show. They can't possibly dub it, due to the singing. This is only a shame because I have images of a badly dubbed Sue Sylvester in my head, and, in my head, it is sheer glory. Ah well!

Glee airs starting January 28th, at 11pm on Fox Japan.

And as an added bonus I had Google Translate translate the summary of the show that Fox Japan has up into English. It is pretty accurate!

All gift for poignant comedy loser! To laugh together, sing together! Best comedy series ever fun! Glee to bring to its glory of McKinley High School, Will Schuster rise of novice teacher!

It makes me so happy!

Glory of the Glee to Japan! Arigato!

After about eight weeks of promos we finally got GLEE in Israel last week. It's subtitled in Hebrew (which of course is no help to me, because my Hebrew is only marginally better than my 3 year old's)...and let me tell you, Journey lyrics don't translate all that well.

But the show? Is all kinds of awesome. Which I already knew, since Mamapop has been my source of entertainment news since I moved here in the summer.

That's all kinds of awesome, though now I really wonder what the lyrics translate to!

This type of thing usually ends up dubbed unless they're going to do their own Japanese version with a Japanese cast. May end up dubbed AND with subtitles, as much of the Japanese-language programming on TV over there has subtitles in Japanese. This is due to the economy of sound and contextual nature of the language.

At any rate, this will be great for the expats over there, because there's a function on most Japanese televisions that allows you to watch dubbed programming in the original language! Whee!

Kate

LOL it's nothing weird, just a literal word for word translation, which misses the poetry of the whole song. (also no rhyme, of course)
