Spider-Man Musical Might Still Happen

Spiderman-musical[1] Well, the Spider-Man movies may have hit a snag of utter turmoil and confusion but the musical, thought dead, may be back on track! Now, keep in mind this is a musical that will cost around $50 million to produce. A &50 million dollar musical. Of Spider-Man. Stop laughing. Or don't.

The music is by Bono and The Edge. It is the most expensive musical ever made on Broadway. It fell apart. For a while.

Bono has apparently called in Michael Cohl, a longtime business associate, to get everything back and running. According to the Post (source) it will now open around November of 2010 instead of the initial March 2010 date.

The production is offering refunds to folks who bought tickets, which I think they might be legally required to do. I'm not sure, but it seems about right. Also, Alan Cumming is still going to play the Green Goblin.

Will this thing make any money? Will it be a decent musical? Who knows. I lean toward a firm "maybe" myself, not only because I don't want to commit to things, that's scary I tells you, but because, well…

Bono and The Edge writing a musical with Alan Cumming as the bad guy? That sounds like it could either be the best or worst thing around, and absolutely nothing in-between. There's no middle ground for this one, I fear.

I also, personally, worry that if it does work we will be treated to a bunch of Super Hero musicals. Batman: The Singing Knight, Superman… oh wait he had a musical TV special once. No. Really:

Now that I've given you faith, on to Spider-Man!

So my parents had ticket to this. To take my 4 year old for his 5th b-day. And they got a refund. The seats were in the "flying circle." Needless to say we did not tell my son, who would be devastated. I think my husband is thrilled he does not have to sit through this travesty.

Oh wow. Well, I dunno, I mean on the one hand I've never met anyone else who even knew someone with tickets. On the other hand - wanna go see Starlight Express?

jodifur

Adam-I've seen Starlight Express. It wasn't very good. And it hasn't been on Broadway in, I don't know, maybe 20 years. How about Wicked?

Adam P. Knave

@jodifur I'm not a Wicked fan really. Also I am now jealous you saw Starlight Express.

jodifur

Adam-love Wicked. And really? SE? Well, it tours a lot. You can probably catch it. Phantom? Same composer.

(I'm a musical theater nerd.)

I love old American musicals. I have the entire score of Barnum memorized. Guys and Dolls, too, pretty much. But Phantom never worked for me.  Growing up in NY was very good for this sort of love.

We could totally hang out.

Well why don't we?
