To Catch a Thief - World of Warcraft

World-of-warcraft-logo This is going to sound like the plot to a particularly geeky episode of Law & Order but it actually happened.

This guy named Alfred Hightower was in trouble with the law for dealing drugs and so he fled the country.

The fuzz tracked him down by checking up on his World of Warcraft character.

No shit.

The police subpoenaed Blizzard Entertainment who provided Alfred Hightower's screen name, IP address, account history and server information.

Then they used a Google Earth search and tracked down the big bad drug dealer/cyber dorkus in America's hat. Hightower was gaming in Ottawa.

Pay attention parents, now we have to teach out children not only to not deal drugs, but if they get caught not to play video games. It is sort of like a punishment in itself.

. . . . .
Goon Squad Sarah thinks the police would track her down using either twitter or netflix.

That is why I sit on my ass and look blankly at the television.

Didn't I see this played out on South Park?

There actually WAS an episode of CSI New York that used this premise. Except the criminal was known for more than drugs... murder maybe? Anyway, Lieutenant Dan's character (I don't remember the name of the actual actor... something Senese? or something...) has to "duel to the death" with the player, and of course instantly becomes a pro at the controls... anyway.

Wow. I am like a backwards psychic.

Or something.
