American Idol Recap - A Coming Of Ellen Story

Ellen-degeneres-american-idol Welcome to American Idol recap. This week, American Idol took us to Hollywood. It also gave us our first glimpse of the new American Idol judge, Ellen DeGeneres. Not much else was worth talking about. So that's what we're going to do this week.. Without any further ado... THIS IS AMERICAN IDOL! recap.

Before we get started, I just want to be clear about one thing. I am not an Ellen hater. Quite the contrary. I've watched her show (once on a treadmill in Florida, while visiting my in-laws) before and find it pretty refreshing (boring) compared to all the other shitty talk shows (Montel is the bomb) on TV. She's a talented (mediocre) stand up comedian and a fantastic advocate for the gay and lesbian community. But this is about her role on American Idol ONLY and you know how serious we are about Idol here at the Recap.

I'm not quite sure where to start but how about, the show was a huge bore. With all the build up and self touting that Ellen has been doing on her show and in the media, I was expecting a huge splash on her first night. In fact, we got quite the opposite.

109757_american-idol-ellen-degeneres-and-simon-cowell I'm hoping that what is happening, is an excruciatingly slow build up of tension between the departing Simon and the incoming Ellen. In reality though, I have a feeling it's far less interesting than that. Here's my honest take.

Ellen is full of herself. Simon is full of himself. Ellen thinks she is funny on the show but she's not. Simon is leaving and he's obviously bored and fed up with the show. He misses flirting with Paula and he knows the new chemistry is not going to work. He's basically checked himself out mentally. He's happy to let Ellen try and pick up the slack but she's not really living up to expectations. I still can't believe Idol producers picked Ellen, knowing that Simon was on his way out. Now they're going to be forced to bring in another huge talent to replace the departing Cowell. I can't imagine Ellen wanting to share the spotlight with anyone else. We'll just have to wait and see.

Aside from some silly comments and joking around with contestants, I felt that Ellen was completely out of place on her first night. She looked old and she lacks any sort of music credibility. She basically admitted this and then tried to compensate by telling the contestants that she knows what it's like to try and please a room full of people. That's great. There are salespeople and teachers that can say the same thing.

There were moments when I felt as if I were watching my Mother up there, trying to comment on things that she quite simply didn't understand. I wanted to say, "Hey Mom! You're embarrassing me in front of my friends. Please go back to your bedroom with your boyfriend and watch Matlock."

Unfortunately it's not that easy. It seems as if we're going to have to be patient. Could this be Fox's Jay Leno mistake?

I mean look at them. It doesn't make any sense. There were a million people they could have chosen to compliment the existing crew. The great thing about Paula was that she was a friggin' train wreck. It was a beautiful spectacle. Ellen is the opposite. She's calm, witty and poised. It's incredibly mundane. Even the little things are starting to annoy me, like how she needs to put her glasses on to see the papers in front of her. I know this sounds nit-picky but I can't help myself. There were a few comical moments involving DeGeneres on the first night but I thought they were a bit contrived. At one point she instructed the line of contestants, awaiting the judges decision to take one step forward, one step back, one step forward etc. The moment definitely helped to relieve some of the tension but it just didn't seem natural to me. Then Kara turned to Ellen and said in a phony voice, "That was great." Why is Kara kissing her ass? It was just weird. I really don't see her being able to offer these kids any advice that will help them improve. Tips about being "less scary" and "please put your shoes on" are going to wear thin before too long. I just hope it doesn't get ugly.

I'm of the opinion that the contestants are what make the show great. It's awesome to see raw talent come into their own and deal with the sponteneity and the pressure. We don't need a comedian trying to steal the spotlight. I get the impression that Ellen wants the show to be about her. It's not right. It's unfair and it's just not that interesting.

With that being said, I'll drop it for now and give her a chance. She's only been on for 2 hours. I guess I can cut her some slack.

But Ellen please, I beg of you...

Be mindful of the children and DON'T FUCK UP MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!

Reminders of Paula everywhere we turn...

Out-Numbered Out!

Jason never thought he'd have daughters and now he will always be Out-Numbered.

faida ussene

that whas god

Leigh

I really like your recaps but I just have to get one thing off my chest.

ADO. Without further ADO. God.

Thanks!

Amy

He sang that better than Paula. He moved that song into listen-to-able.

Out-Numbered

@Leigh You are absolutely correct. Damn fucking google! I should have known, my step mother is french.

Alyssa

"she looked old"? Really? And what, Simon looks like a spring chick? I'm no Ellen fan, either, and I agree with everything else you said but that seemed a little out of place/irrelevant.

Fawn Amber

I couldn't disagree more. I am actually optimistic about this season now...if they had left it just Simon, Randy and the wretched Kara, I don't know if I could have handled it. I thought Ellen was funny, knowledgeable and entertaining. But to each her own, eh?

Jane

I miss Paula, for exactly those reasons. The beauty of her was that you never knew what was going to come out of her mouth. The rest are so predictable.

JAR

I wish they'd ask Neil Patrick Harris to permanently join the show. He was an awesome guest judge.

Also, let's boot Kara and bring in an industry big wig.

Tracy

Ooh, I agree with JAR...bring in NPH.

BUT, I do like Kara, and I also like Ellen. I really think they didn't show too much of the judges given how much content they had to squeeze into a one(two) hour show. It's all condensed editing. I think we'll see more of the good stuff once we go live.

Be patient, friends.

Suzy Q

If they would only get rid of Randy...
