Birdemic: My New Cause

Birdemic I opened the New York Times site today and glanced at the headlines. Depressing. So I navigated my way to the Arts section to see if I could find something to write about today. And then, just like that, Birdemic: Shock and Terror entered my life.

I'm not sure how I've managed to hear nothing about this movie, especially since it staged something of a coup at Sundance last year, but now I'm on a mission to get a screening in my city.

Birdemic Birdemic: Shock and Terror is the passion project of James Nguyen, a 43-year-old software salesman who set out to make a tribute to The Birds, the classic horror film from Nguyen's favorite director, Alfred Hitchcock. Nguyen invested $10,000 of his own money and spent seven months filming the movie in 2008.

Not surprisingly, Birdemic: Shock and Terror was rejected from the Sundance Film Festival. Nguyen, however, is nothing if not determined. He simply went to Sundance with his movie anyway, showing it in bars and handling his own promotion by driving around Park City in his beat-up SUV, which he decorated with a huge prop eagle and fake blood and blared bird noises from his stereo. This guy is my fucking hero.

From what I can tell, the plot of Birdemic: Shock and Terror is basically the same as The Birds: all of a sudden all of the birds in the world go berserk. And there is much pecking. What makes it special is the stilted acting, vague screenplay...and the special effects. Oh, the special effects. Really, I can't adequately describe them so just take a look at the trailer.

The quotes from the NYT article make it sound as though this was a serious attempt at filmmaking and Nguyen is surprised that it has a cult following, but gladly accepts his movie's infamy.

All I know is that I have to see this movie and will now commence bombarding their distributor with emails. You can request a screening in your city, too. Check the official site, birdemic.com, for info.

Rachael

I am almost speechless. I can't believe that this is real. It looks like he made a movie then asked a 10 year old to add some birds or something. So. Weird.

Sherri

I can make a similar movie by taking a flip book and some stickers and my cell phone. In fact, I think maybe I'll spend my afternoon doing just that. Anyone want to go to Sundance next year?

Laurpud

Thanks, I needed a good laugh! This looks so hilariously awful, that I'd like to see it. Once. With vodka. Plenty of vodka.
