Flashback Friday - Purple Rain

Prince-purple-rain  Dig if you will the picture of a tiny, shirtless Prince humping every inch of the stage while screeching "Darling Nikki." Purple Rain is a terrible movie and I watch it, without fail, every single time it's on cable.

Okay, that's not fair. Purple Rain (directed by Albert Magnoli and written by Magnoli and William Blinn) is actually really great if you think of it as one long music video with a loose narrative, and in that respect it's certainly better than, say, R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet, though certainly far less (unintentionally) humorous.

The plot involves "The Kid," the talented lead singer of The Revolution, his rivalry with Morris Day and The Time, and his struggle to overcome his abusive homelife in his own tumultuous romance with the beautiful Apollonia. Yes, "The Kid" is a misogynist and an asshole, and I won't apologize for him in any way. I will only say that what he lacks in people skills he makes up for in stage presence.

This movie is poorly acted and the screenplay is awful, but I will cut a bitch who does not admit that the soundtrack more than makes up for these facts. Here is the plain, god's honest truth: Purple Rain brought us songs like the title song, the aforementioned "Darling Nikki," "When Doves Cry," "I Would Die 4 U," and "Let's Go Crazy." And, of course, most importantly "Jungle Love" by Morris Day and The Time.

And because these songs would not be indelibly etched into our pop culture without Purple Rain, we salute you, Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.

I just remember feeling so dirty and intrigued and excited by Prince and Apollonia in that one bedroom scene. You know which one I'm talking about. Pure porn, to my 7th grade eyes.

I remember Purple Rain as being my first glimpse of Movie Boob. I will always be nostalgic about it for that reason, no matter how terrible a movie it is.

Purple Rain was my introduction to "dirty" scenes in movies.
Explains a few things, doesn't it?

I didn't like the movie, but I LOOOOOOOOVED that album.

Yes, I won it on vinyl. What of it?

Sarah, Goon Squad Sarah

Own it, not won it.

But won it sounds cooler.

Oh, yeah, Morris Day and the MotherF#@%ing Time. When my we-have-a-pact-boyfriend and I get married at 50 (I think that's the year - it changes), Jungle Love is gonna be our first dance.

That song just made my day, f'real.

oh wee oh wee oh.

I got to see Morris Day and the Time at UMASS - with Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam WITH FULL FORCE. (!) What a hilarious show of shoulderpads and funk.

Oak Tree!

Washington "Purple Haze Purple Rain Deep Purple" Cube

I was watching it the other day when it popped up on some odd tv channel. Agreed. Stinkoid film. Fantastic album. I watch Hunt for Red October every time it is on. What is it with these "color" films?
