Interpretive Dunce - I've Got My Mind Set On You by George Harrison

Sfgh8701The Interpretive Dunce has returned for your pants! We're here to help you understand what song lyrics really mean. With the aid of the mighty Selectorbot 5000 your suggestions are turned into actual analysis! Sort of. Don't look to close. This week, we had no suggestions! So we dug into the collective unconscious and came back with I've Got My Mind Set On You by George Harrison. Let's go to the video tape:

Once there were the Beatles. The biggest rock band the land had ever seen. Then they broke up. For a time it seemed as if nothing good could come of that break-up. Then Lennon did some good stuff (and bad, what with Yoko helping), and then there was McCartney with Wings. And once again we thought no good would come of this. But then George Harrison came at us with a song that promised us a light at the end of the tunnel. This was not that song.

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

But it's gonna take money a whole lotta spending money
It's gonna take plenty of money to do it right child
It's gonna take time a whole lotta precious time
It's gonna take patience and time mmm to do it to do it
To do it to do it to do it to do it right child

One has to wonder what George means. This is the man who wrote Yellow Submarine, after all. It couldn't be as simple as him wanting to woo some woman. He's a Beatle! I mean, come on, when you're a Beatle you can look at anyone in the world, crook a finger and go "My bed, love, and snappy," and have it pay off. It's a perk.

So, no, we must dig deeper.

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

And this time I know it's real the feeling that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it I know that I really can do it
I got my mind set on you (set on you)
I got my mind set on you (set on you)

He seems obsessed, doesn't he? I mean really and truly obsessed. In a bad way. All he can think about is doing this thing, we don't even know what it is, to this person or thing. Notice that? He isn't saying that he can end up in love. Just that he is obsessing over this "you" and that he will "do it" but what, George, what?!

But it's gonna take money a whole lotta spending money
It's gonna take plenty of money to do it right child
It's gonna take time a whole lotta precious time
It's gonna take patience and time mmm to do it to do it
To do it to do it to do it to do it right

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

And this time I know it's real the feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it I know that I really can do it
But it's gonna take money a whole lotta spending money
It's gonna take plenty of money to do it right child
It's gonna take time a whole lotta precious time
It's gonna take patience and time mmm to do it to do it
To do it to do it to do it to do it right

Yup. See the story is this. Back in the day the Beatles weren't doing so great. So they went on a huge tour and happened to play a gig in Mordor (it's near Liverpool). George found the ring but didn't tell anyone. The ring moved around within the band but Geroge was never allowed ot have it again. He's always wanted it back, always.

But Yoko won't budge.

This has been the Interpretive Dunce! You know how we do this of course: You suggest a song in the comments (you know you want to) and I will randomly pick one and interpret it for you. You chose what we'll be talking about next week. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Just remember this only works when you join in the fun. Come back next week and I'll continue to help you get to the bottom of what these folks actually mean with their lyrics. And now is the time we kick out some jams.

You can read previous editions of the Interpretive Dunce here.

steph

Paul wrote Yellow Submarine.

Adam P. Knave

No, he took credit for it in a deal with George after George wiped out the Ents. It's a long story. (like that one?)

Washington "Poi " Cube

George had a passion for ukeleles. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Wanna see me hula to "King Kamehameha, Conqueror of the Islands, became a might hero one day?" No? :::sipping pineapple juice:::

Adam P. Knave

I think that you should, yes. Go on, then. *grin*

Jen

I will now be singing this damn song for the rest of the night. I didn't even click "Play" on the youtube video!

Adam P. Knave

It does get stuck in there, doesn't it?

steph

I would like the long story. Are you calling my Hard Day's Write book a liar? :)

Adam P. Knave

No I'm saying I'm covering for a mistake by weaving it into the tale *grin*

steph

Ha, nicely done and over my head. Thanks!

Thanks!
