Kate Winslet Is Single, I Wonder if I Stand a Chance?

Kate-winslet-sam-mendes I have these silly little celebrity crushes that I think we all have (right?...RIGHT?) and hanging out on my short list are: Casey Affleck, Edward Norton, Tyler Florence, Tom Colicchio and, well, Kate Winslet (also, Jennifer Aniston). Oh, come on, I can't be the only straight woman who thinks a member of the same sex can do no wrong and is so stunningly beautiful, it should be a crime? Am I? Well, anyway, who cares if I am. I love her, I think she's the most talented actress there is, and she's one of very few actresses whose personal life affects me in a creepily too-invested way. Hearing the news today that she and Sam Mendes, her husband of nearly 7 years, have split made me pretty sad, admittedly. And every man reading this rolled his eyes.

Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet Funny enough, I just read this ridiculous-at-first-thought feature about how many couples split up soon after a big night at the Oscars (Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer; Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe; Hillary Swank and Chad Lowe) and now, just a year after Kate's big 2009 Oscar night, she and American Beauty/Revolutionary Road director, Mendes are through. So, yeah, totally stupid article! That....may be onto something!

The split, according to the mega-famous couple's lawyer, was "mutually amicable" and blah, blah, routine statement blah. They have a six-year-old son, Joe, and Kate has a little girl, Mia, from her first marriage to another director Jim Threapleton. Huh, Kate has a type, I see. Apparently all I need to do is become a famous movie director and I might stand a chance.

And there's the small detail of also needing to be a man, but these are merely technicalities, my friends.

You also have to wonder (hope?) if maybe this split will finally pave the way for her and best bud Leo to get together. Although, we all think she can do better than him, don't we? Call me, Kate!

This made me really sad too, because Kate Winslet is like one of my all-time biggest girl crushes.

steff

i totally did not see this coming...

Sad face. I heart her a lot. I even watched "Revolutionary Road" twice. That's love.

Jen O.

I love her, too, but I don't want to see her naked. I'm sad because she's probably sad and that's sad. It's always sad. But now we get to see who she dates next, and that's all kinds of gossipy fun.

Alyssa

Also sad. Way to bum me out!

When I read that press release I thought, "What a ton of glossy nothing."

Give us, "Sam kept squeezing the toothpaste tube in the middle and leaving his socks on the floor," or "I walked into the family room and the au pair was sitting in Sam's lap while they cuddled and watched Telemundo."

I'm in love with love. When two people are together and wandering around with that glazed look in their eyes? You want the best for them. It would take a callous heart to think "Oh grow up!" It would take a cold heart to go to their wedding and think, "Odds are it will never work."

When I hear about couple's parting, even people I don't know, it still creates a "tinge" of regret that it didn't stick--all of that joy and hope and working at balance in a relationship and...shrug...dunzo. Gone.

...and Jennie? You can have Casey Affleck, but I will fight you over Edward Norton. Thank gawd you didn't mention Ryan Gosling.

I love Kate, as well. She's so cool it's ridiculous (and appears effortless).

Regin

My Top Five for Free are all men except Helena Christiansen. And I may need to add Mary Louise-Parker. I love Kate, but she is not my imaginary-lesbian-inside-me-trying-to-get-out's type.

Jennie

Regin, I too love Mary Louise Parker. Actually, I have far more female crushes than I let on. Someone, somewhere would probably love to analyze what that means.

Apryl's Antics

OMG. I love Mary Louise Parker, too. I love her enough to punch Billy Crudup. That's how much.

Julia

I love Kate Winslet apparently as much as you do. So I was majorly bummed yesterday afternoon when I read about this on People.com.

(However, just between you and me, I think Leo and Kate getting together and having little Kate and Leo babies would make me happier than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Which is a whole heck of a lot.)

Katy

Reese Witherspoon is my all-time favorite girl crush and I'd appreciate it if you didn't do anything to take that away from me.

It seems like it's big Oscar nights for women--like there are so few men who can deal with being Mr. Girls Name, which is what they get stuck with if they're dating someone that talented.

mrschaos

This post made me feel all kinds of better about myself...and my feelings for Kate Winslet.

Yes, my husband knows.

(And yes, I was bummed about the split.)

Kristina

I have a crush on Meryl Streep. My husband doesn't know. And I've got a friend who crushes on Jodie Foster. So, you're definitely not alone. :)

Little Neddie

Oh, Kate is so smart and sexy! I'm so in lust with her.
