Flashback Friday - My Two Dads

My two dads Paul Reiser Greg Evigan Staci Keanan  What was with the 80s and straight dudes raising kids together? While Three Men and a Baby and Full House are what probably come to mind for most people, today I come to you instead to talk about a lesser comedy about co-parenting bachelors: the television series My Two Dads.

I didn't really have stellar male figures in my life, so it's unsurprising that My Two Dads appealed to me. Two dads? Neither of which is shitty?  Where do I stand in line? Also, they had this bitchin' loft apartment above a cafe, a dream of mine that remains as yet unfulfilled.

So basically the show was like Three Men and a Baby Minus One meets The Odd Couple. Check out this awesome credit sequence:

They're like a checklist for the 80s:

Sassy teenager voiceover? Check.

Wild and colorful graphics? Check.

Poppy, saxophone-laden theme song? Check.

Cosby sweaters? Check.

Mullet? You betcha.

Dick Butkus...wait, what? Yeah, I dunno.

So what happened after My Two Dads' three season run? Well, Paul Reiser of course went on to be on Mad About You, and Staci Keanan (Nicole) went on to be on an even more horrible sitcom called Step by Step. The second of the dads, Greg Evigan, went on to do pretty much fuck-all, once the demand for dudes with mullets petered out.

Could a show like My Two Dads succeed on television today? In an era where realism is valued—at least by those of us who don't watch Lost—I think not. Who on earth would ever believe that two men could live together in a fabulous apartment with lovely children in a society that would accept them as they are?

Katie

I loooooooved this show. And I watch Lost. Coincidence? I think not.

Whitney

I loved that show too, and I never thought about it in terms of filling the hole left by my absentee father. All the more reason.

Whitney

Um, and I apparently still know all the lyrics to the theme song.

tonya

Loved this show! How come all the dopey lovable 90's characters were named "Joey"? Is that like the international name for "good time guy, not real bright"?

Jenny

great, now I'm going to have to google where is Greg Evigan now.

Jessi

Loved this show! Absentee father. I think I'm a cliche.

Katharama

Man, I loved this show. Especially when Davy Jones guest starred, therefore incorporating my Monkees obsession into a show I already watched. And she had a Depeche Mode poster in her room. Lord, I'm a dork.

jodifur

I loved this show. But man, was it ever bad.

Jenny

Uhhh, also had an absentee father, here and LOVED that show. Love Lost too!

April

Loved it. Giovanni Ribisi and Cory? Greatness. I heard the show was intended to be two gay men but since the creators knew society wasn't "ready" for that, they came up with the whole slutty dead mom thing.

BaltimoreGal

I adored this ridiculous show.
