Panic Attack Reality Pilot Bringing Daytime Talk Show Fodder to Prime Time

Fox-logo Fox has ordered a pilot of a new reality show called Panic Attack in which participants will face their greatest fears with the help of therapists.

The show will be produced by A. Smith & Co, which also produced Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares.

The episodes will feature a group of people who share the same phobia confronting that phobia while the show's therapists, Nik and Eva Speakman, watch and cringe.

I haven't been in a position to watch daytime talk shows in awhile, but I'm fairly certain that this premise was a regular feature on the likes of Maury and Montel because it has all of the necessary ingredients: people freaking out and/or acting embarrassingly and a situation that has no real consequence on the world. I haven't been keeping tabs on the reality TV machine, but have we already explored series that feature a mom, her child, and her child's 15 possible fathers? Or out of control teens who get sent to boot camp?

I'm also a tad irked by the title. Phobias and panic attacks are two separate things, though I suppose one could have a panic attack as the result of a phobia. I don't know why they wouldn't just call it Phobia, though.

I'm just tired of these shows that highlight mental illness as a source of entertainment for the rest of us. Documentary bringing misunderstood illnesses to light? Okay I can see that, but this? No.
