RIP Lena Horne

Lena-horne Singer and actress Lena Horne passed away last night in a New York hospital. She was 92.

Horne was perhaps best known for her singing career, but had roles in many prominent Hollywood films after she became one of the first African-Americans to sign a long-term movie contract in 1942. However, studio executives often refused to give her roles that were suited to her acting talent, preferring instead to put her in more subservient roles or easily editable singing roles, due to racist attitudes of the times. This discrimination fueled Horne's progressive political views, which landed her on Hollywood blacklists during the Red Scare, and helped to further inspire her civil rights activism.

Horne's sublime voice was easily recognizable and remained a prominent performer throughout her life, reintroducing herself to multiple generations. Among her many awards, she won four Grammys and was nominated for four others. She will definitely be missed.

Washington "Cabin In The Sky" Cube

She had a long and interesting life. One thing I remember reading,(and I liked knowing,) was that she loved Popeye's chicken and would have her driver or daughter bring it to her when it could have been caviar and champagne.

Stormy Weather is her classic signature piece, but I think my favorite is her version of Jingle Bells (it's on You Tube):

You Tube has quite a feast of Lena, including a GAP commercial she did in 1997...still rocking her looks and voice.

Man, my dad is going to be heartbroken.

Suzy Q

Sigh. Oh, Lena.
