Three Kids Shows that are Fun for the Whole Family (Videos Galore)

Phineas-and-ferb  Just say it - if you have to watch Dora the Explorer find the chocolate tree one more time you are going to completely lose your mind.

I fully appreciate the educational value of "Dora the Explorer". I understand that the constant repetition is why my children know all of their colors in Spanish, and the big red hen was charming the first 35 times I saw it, but when that little punk makes me yell "Swiper, no swiping!" when she could just walk over there and grab the damn key herself I want to punch her right in her bilingual throat.

Ahem.

What I am trying to say is that if you are like me and you like to actually watch television with your children, you don't have to watch "Max and Ruby" you have other options.

The following three shows are programs that I would watch even if I didn't have kids. One of them is a show I actually did watch before I had kids and I had to buy on DVD for my children because I owned the VHS tapes, and who even owns a working VCR anymore?

Behold my list of three:

1) Phineas and Ferb

I love this show. Phineas and Ferb are step-brothers that are trying to keep busy during summer vacation. Every day they build or do something crazy while their sister tries to get them in trouble. It is amazingly well written and it never fails to make me laugh.

Plus it has good music.

"Phineas and Ferb" also have a pet platapus who is a secret agent. His nemesis is the best part of the show. You really have to watch it. Richard O'Brien (yes! Riff Raff) is the voice of their Dad, their grandfathers is Malcolm McDowell and barry Bostwick (another Rocky Horror alum), their mom is Caroline Rhea and other celebrity voices include Allison Janney, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Grey, and John Larroquette. I tell you, you cannot go wrong with this show!

2) Animaniacs

Back in the early 1990s Steven Spielberg and Warner Brothers got together and made educational cartoons. "Animaniacs" was sort of an animated variety show featuring a rotating cast of characters with their own sketches. Most of them are hysterical and clever.

Yes. I watched this show in college, and now my kids love it. It is smart and funny enough for adults to enjoy but it also works for kids. Your kids might not know WHY "Goodfeathers" - three gangster type pigeons who live on a statue of Martin Scorsese - is funny to us, but they know that birds getting in fist fights is funny. "Pinky and the Brain" are lab mice that try to take over the world every night, "Slappy the Squirrel" is a grouchy, aging cartoon star, Yakko, Wacko and Dot - the Warner Brothers AND the Warner sister, and there are many more, equally ridiculous and funny characters.

Plus there is stuff like this:

 and this

3) Yo Gabba Gabba

"Yo Gabba Gabba" is so weird and different from any other kids show that it is hard to miss. Sure, the characters look crazy and strange, but it is actually pretty cool, especially if you have little kids.

"Yo Gabba Gabba" is hosted by D.J. Lance Rock and guest stars come from all over the place. I've seen Elijah Wood, Mark Mothersbaugh, The Aquabats, The Ting Tings, Tony Hawk, The Shins, Amy Sedaris, Jack Black, Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Weird Al Yankovic, Weezer, Tim Armstrong, Anthony Bourdain... I could go on. Or I could just show you this:

And one more video for good luck. I think I would actually enjoy watching "Dora the Explorer" if it was more like this.

Dawn

My three year old loves Yo Gabba Gabba...and my husband is planning on dressing up as DJ Lance Rock for Halloween this year. I like to think of it as "H.R. Puffenstuff-lite".

Though anything is better than Max and Ruby.

My friend Lumpyhead's Mom made Lumpyhead the best D.J. Lance costume ever a few years back.

The secret is in the glasses.

Yo Gabba Gabba gives me nightmares. However, I have to plug "The Penguins of Madagascar"--that show cracks both my husband and myself up on a regular basis, and we are constantly referencing it in our daily conversations. And using lines to parent our children. "You know who else doesn't like to eat broccoli? THE RED SQUIRREL!"

Animaniacs...man I loved them. Now I need to introduce them to my kids. I am kind of a kid show brat. I avoided most preschool shows. I've let them watch Disney tween shows, but I'm slowly un-letting them watch those, one at a time, because I got tired of the attitude I was getting.

We watch old Muppets, Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes. Newer shows? My girls love cooking shows. Favorites are Ace of Cakes, Top Chef and Bobby Flay's Showdown. Also Extreme Cake Challenges.

Let me think. We watch American Idol (although I fast forward though tons of it), Amazing Race and Americas Funniest Home Videos. That last one is funny to me, because I think I was the age my oldest is now, when I started watching it.

I missed the Yo Gabba Gabba train, but LOVE the other two.

We even have a two fish named Phineas (or FINeas) and one named Heinz DooFINnshmirtz. Yes, we're that weird. But we love the show.

Sarah, Goon Squad Sarah

@karen Yes! Penguins of Madagascar is funny too!

Sarah, Goon Squad Sarah

DooFINshmirts. That is awesome.

Randa

You should add Adventure Time with Fin and Jake. Because it is amazingly weird. My three year old loves it for some reason, and even more strange is that I can watch them over and over again too.

Sarah, Goon Squad Sarah

I don't know that one. I will go set my DVR.

Peyton

I love Phineas & Ferb! It's the one Disney show that I'll sit and watch all the way through with my five-year old.

Jessica

My hubby & I love Phineas & Ferb as much as our children. "Squirrels In My Pants" is even my hubby's current ringback tone on his phone.

Mouse

I watched "Phineas and Ferb" earlier today when my 7-year-old was in school. I really enjoy catching episodes I haven't seen yet.

And I'm sad that my son hasn't wanted to watch "Animaniacs" yet. We've been trying to get him to give it 5 minutes, but it just hasn't happened.

Sandwiched

Totally love Phineas and Ferb. My husband and I watch it (alongside The Daily Show) after the kids go to bed. With the kids, without...fabulous either way!

Need to try Animaniacs again. Loved them in college.

Never got into Yo Gabba Gabba. Too weird for me, I guess.

We also watch AFV and have some Muppet Show DVDs...classic.

kate

Phineas and Ferb are AWESOME!
We love the little girl Isabella;
"Whatchadooooooooin"

helenel

I know my kids shouldn't be watching it, but Lord I love Fanboy and Chum Chum.

Sarah, Goon Squad Sarah

I let my kids watch "The Simpsons" too.

I don't know if that is the best idea, but they love it.

Leandra

You didn't mention that Ashley Tisdale does the voice of Candace in Phineas & Ferb. That gave me a whole new respect for ol' Ash! Plus, The Disco Miniature Golfing Queen is one of the best songs. It's so catchy.

We're a little past Yo Gabba Gabba in our house, but if we happen to flip by and catch "There's a party in my tummy" we're all dancing.

Animaniacs was awesome back in the day.

bd

I was JUST thinking about how good Phineas and Ferb are after watching with my 4 year old. She left the room and I finished watching! I also loved animaniacs back in the day. And our fail-safe DVR'd Yo Gabba Gabba episode is the famous Jack Black one. Never fails to entertain.

mommymae

we, too, love those 3 shoes. we have all of the animaniacs dvds that are available & my kids love them.

-my girls thought candace was kansas on phineas & ferb.

-also, the boy plays doofinshmirtz & ninja with his daddy all the time. it's rather cute.

keri

Jumping on the Phineas and Ferb train! My ex-husband is even more obsessed with it than my son is! My favorite episode is the one where Candace eats the moss(?) and thinks she is is high the entire episode, only to find out it wasn't the right moss. Hysterical!
