Trailer for New George Clooney Film "The American" Is Out

George-clooney-the-american What is the best kind of movie?  Is it a toy-based explodeathon?  A Nicko-Disney tweenspoitation money suck?  A Heigl-bot romcom with all the freshness of abandoned farm equipment?  The answer is: none of the above. It's a brooding post-Cold War thriller set in picturesque Europe. That's what The American appears to be. Starring George Clooney and women!  Check out the very pretty trailer.

As far as I can tell, there's not much new on display here: an assassin who wants out but is offered one last job.  In romantic Italy.  With priests, hot women, rifles in suitcases, and ruminations about the role of the divine in a corrupt assassin-featuring world.  I expect that Clooney's character will discover that things are not as they seem and that nothing is what it pretends to be and that his eventual death will make no sense to him or to us.  But!  It's directed by Anton Corbijn, whose first feature film was the excellent Joy Division biopic Control.  So I've got a good feeling about this one.

Release date is September 1st, just past the summer blockbuster season and standing at the gate of the fall Oscar contenders.

Washington "Who Came Out Of The Cold" Cube

I can't believe I don't have one snarky thing to say about this news. Instead: ooooo! I love post Cold War assassin thriller dillers. I love adult films where characters question and there are ruminations, and I loved the film "Control." Why I do believe I will be going to see this movie when it comes out.

Last night I saw Chris Cooper pop up in some movie, and just now I IMDB'd him. Like (almost) all in a row he did: The Bourne Supremacy, Capote, Jarhead, Syriana, Breach, The Kingdom, and then was the voice of Walt Whitman in an episode of The American Experience. THAT's what I'm talking about. (and man, what good solid career choices he's been making.)

I know summer is the season for "it go boom," and I'll be going to see Iron Man, just like everyone else, but I love it when really solid, thoughtful adult films come out. There are way too many weekends pursuing the movie listings and going "eh."
