Firefly: Still Flying Keeps the 'Verse Alive

Firefly-book-cover Firefly fans, take note!  A love letter/companion book to Joss Whedon's series has come out, and it's... shiny.

Firefly: Still Flying: A Celebration of Joss Whedon's Acclaimed Television Series is everything a fan could want, except maybe for a threesome with Nathan Fillion and Morena Baccarin.  Or how about smoking meth and driving around Los Angeles with Alan Tudyk?  That actually sounds like fun.  Except for the driving around Los Angeles bit.

As everyone knows, Firefly was a very short-lived Fox series that ran for eleven episodes in 2002.  Conceived by Joss Whedon and Tim Minear as a frontier Western set in space (or maybe Road House in space), the show never fit with Fox's lineup and subsequently died a slow horrible death.  Despite its short run and low ratings, the series found a cult following on DVD and even led to the feature film Serenity, for whose premiere I pretended to have a dental appointment in order to leave work in the middle of the afternoon.

Still Flying
is a gorgeous book, full of colour photos and behind-the-scenes info.  Anecdotes and interviews with cast and crew abound.  Some of the material, such as Jane Espenson's breakdown of the writing process, is genuinely fascinating stuff.  Some of it is strictly for the most rabid of fans, unless you enjoy reading about 'Monkey Shines,' a prop monkey toy kidnapped from the set and sent on a road trip around North America.

As a bonus, the book features four short stories from Firefly writers, including Ben Edlund (The Tick, Supernatural) and Jane Espenson (Buffy, Battlestar Galactica).  So if you have a friend or relative with an addiction to disastrously knitted caps and a habit of blurting out phrases like "shiny" or "we've done the impossible and that makes us mighty," Firefly: Still Flying is the perfect gift.  Aside from the whole Fillion-Baccarin thing.

Buy it on Amazon, why dontcha.

Oh, I must own this. We are insufferable Firefly nerds at my house. We torture friends and loved ones with Serenity showings where we laugh at all the inside jokes and roll our eyes at them in pity when they look at us like we're crazy. It's their fault for not taking us up on a marathon of Firefly (which we are always up for).

That'd be a piece of mercy.
