Anthropomorphic Animals Abound: Our Favorite Animated Films

dreamworks-How_to_train_your_dragon As you may have heard, Dreamworks Animation is releasing "How to Train Your Dragon" today, and as part of their ad campaign on MamaPop they kindly offered to sponsor a conversation here about animated movies. Maybe you are all, "Pfft. Another animated movie. La-di-da". Well first of all, no one even SAYS "La-di-da" anymore, so you are a super-square, and second, if it weren't for animated movies we'd have to talk to our kids a whole extra two hours a week, and I don't know about you but I can only hear the harrowing tale of the Double Demon Megazord vs. the Plucky Pikachu or whatever only so many times before I'm ready to send them to college in a steamer trunk. And by "college" I mean "The forgotten closet in my parents barn."

Oscar Nominated Film "French Roast" *crickets*

French-roastYeah, yeah, so everyone's arguing about what won this year's Best Picture Oscar and it's just "'Avatar' was robbed" and "'Hurt Locker' rules" all over the place. Personally, I'm more upset that "French Roast" was beat out by "Logorama."

Hey, where's everybody going?

Expansion of Best Picture Category Allows for Some Oscar Surprises

Oscar Yay! The Oscar nominations were announced today! Whether you think they're the ultimate Hollywood circle jerk or the pinnacle of cinematic achievement, there's no denying that an Oscar nomination means you now have serious credentials in the movie industry. Top Six Reasons Why Fake Politics Are More Fun Than The Real Thing

Mayor_QuimbyYou know what's fun? Here's a hint: it doesn't involve two solid weeks of wall-to-wall political TV advertising. If you live within the broadcast radius of Massachusetts, that's the reality you've been living with for most of 2010... and it sucks big-time. No matter which side of the fence you sit on - or how you feel about the election itself - there's little doubt you're well-past sick of being exposed so relentlessly to attack ads, other attack ads, slightly different attack ads, attack ads produced and paid for by special interest groups, attack ads produced and paid for by political action committees... like I said: it sucks big-time. In fact, it's enough to make you think back wistfully to times gone by — those halcyon days of 2009 when politics meant potential fun TV/movie viewing, and not actual political hackery. Remember those times? It feels like so long ago... <insert segue-to-montage-sequence wavy lines here>

Golden Globes: I Just Can't Hate Tina Fey's Dress

Tina-fey-dress-golden-globes-2010-zac-posen Tina Fey's getting a lot of heat for the Zac Posen dress she wore to last night's Golden Globes and at first I hated it, too. I didn't start yelling at the TV like I usually do, though, because my 13-year-old is a huge Tina Fey fan and I was afraid she'd start crying or not clean her room or make me take her to Hot Topic.

But then the more I stared at the dress the more I started to like it but I couldn't figure out why.

Then it hit me.

I Guess Panic Rooms Aren't Just for the Mentally Ill Anymore

Kurt_westergaard I always thought that people who had a panic room in their house automatically qualified as clinically paranoid. I mean, really, who needs a panic room? If you are at high risk for a home invasion you can get a really nice alarm system or some beefeaters or something. Right?

Kurt Westergaard actually needed and used his panic room on Friday.

Domino's Pizza Resurrecting the Noid

So A Princess, A Frog, And Barack Obama Walk Into A Bar...

Frog-princess I haven't seen The Princess And The Frog. Yet. I want to see it, because I'm dying to know whether it lives up to its hype (first black Disney princess! best Disney princess story yet! JAZZ! NEW ORLEANS! THIS AIN'T YOUR MAMA'S CINDERELLA!) Also, because - ahem - I like Disney movies, princesses or no, and I like taking my kid to movies, yadda yadda.

But there was a vampire movie that I had to go see first, so.
