One year ago today I was sitting in a terrible college summer dinner theater performance, killing my iPhone battery from relentless under-the-table Googling and scrolling through a deluge of "Michael Jackson is dead" updates on Tweetie.
My mind was blown. It was a weird day. Farrah died. Michael died. Scroll scroll scroll.
Cirque du Soliel has signed a deal to take Michael Jackson's songs and dance moves, freak them up a bit, and turn the whole she-bang into a travelling circus and Las Vegas show.
Joe Jackson, as usual, frowned his grumpy old man face and said "I won't see it."
Those crazy Jacksons. Will they ever manage to stay out of the news for more than a week? Yesterday, the Department of Child and Family Services had to pay the Jackson family a visit after it was revealed that Jermaine's 13-year-old son Jaafar had brought a stun gun to the house. And it sounds to me like maybe they should have a daily family meeting to make sure they have their stories straight.
Each year since 1989, the Librarian of Congress, in accordance with the Film Preservation Act, selects 25 films for the National Film Registry that are deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" enough to preserve for all time. What makes this list interesting is that the films don't have to be good so much as they have to be "works of enduring importance to American culture", and so we sort of get to see ourselves through the lens of what we commit to film, and sometimes what we see through that lens is zombies and Miss Piggy.
The more you hang around watching what passes for popular culture ebb and flow the more you simply want certain things to happen. Sure it may be seen as controlling, or needy, but I like to define it as a goal-oriented mindset. I have to find things to write about in this sea of crazy so I have an ever evolving list of things I want to happen. They didn't happen. Here are the ten I wanted to happen the most, in no particular order:
Lady Gaga, née Stefani Germanotta, is set to be ELLE's January 2010 cover girl, and although I am loathe to admit my fangirl status for anything, because, you know, I am way too cool for school, this news sent a thrill through my jumping-up-and-down-screaming fangirl heart. 'Tis true. I want Lady Gaga to be the biggest, most famous performance genius off all time EVAR.

Debbie Rowe, the "mother" (oh yes I put that in air-quotes yes I did) to Prince Michael and Paris is returning to court after talks with Katherine Jackson have failed to produce any visitation in the last 4 months. Pffft. Like she wants to actually visit her precious little dollar signs.
Whooooooooa buddy, were the VMAs out of control this year. By now everyone's heard about Kanye's douchebaggery, but trust me, that wasn't the only OMG moment, by far. There were a lot of missteps at the VMAs, as there are every year, but there also were some highlights, so let's go through the show and dissect the chaos, shall we?

Today, I'm hoping to do the same, though admittedly it's not so much in the eye candy arena as it is just plain awesome. And there's no shower scene involved.

This just in: Dr. Conrad Murray, personal physician to Michael Jackson, will be arrested within the next two weeks and charged with manslaughter. Murray is accused of administering a powerful anesthetic called propofol to his patient, the late Michael Jackson, resulting in his eventual death on June 25th. I guess you probably knew that last part, unless you only just now got DSL installed at the rock under which you currently dwell.
