Feels Like the First Time: Reliving Your Cultural Watershed Moments

Eternal_sunshine_of_the_spotless_mind The AV Club has another fantastic and thought-provoking, loosely list-based article that asks its writers and readers to list "Things we want to experience again for the first time."

In Which I Finally Succumb To The Siren Call Of Twilight Fanfic, Sort Of

Twlight-sparkle

Unlike my fellow goth cougars - and goth cougars in training (I get it Dana, you are not, OMG, ew, old) - here at MamaPop, I did not purchase the Twilight DVD this past weekend. Not that I didn't want to - I hear that the commentary track is pretty freaking hysterical - it's just that I was busy doing other things, like playing with my kids and reading the entire archives of a wiki-blog devoted entirely to all things Twilight. Which, at the time, seemed way funner that watching Robert Pattinson defies the laws of gravity and physics with his hair.

What was even funner? Following the links from the aforementioned wiki-blog to some insanely funny discussion threads between people speculating upon and acting out the life of the Cullen family, pre (and eventually post) Bella. IMfic! OMG! LULZ!

Have finally embraced terminal geekdom. It was good knowing you.

You Should Know Know Your Meme

Wolfy Listen, I'm not usually a person who's prone to hysteria or anything, so it should actually mean something when I say the following to you: OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, I FOUND THE MOST AWESOMEST AWESOMETASTIC WEBSITE CONSTRUCTED FROM 100% PURE GRADE-A AWESOME EVAR!1!!! (PS: AWESOME!!!!)

No really, it's quite good.

But before I unveil the AWESOME!! in question, be warned: once you click over to this site you will lose whole hours, nay, most of an entire work day, to what you find there. It is not a place for people who have any intention of being "productive" (which, ehh, probably doesn't describe most MamaPop readers (or writers, for that matter), so whatevs). Regardless, I think it only right and fair to say upfront: TIMESUCK WARNING AHOY!!! and stuff. Word? Alrighty then.

CelebrityTweet: For The Creepy Stalker-Fan In All Of Us

Screencapture1

As someone who might be, ehh, just a wee bit addicted to Twitter, I was pleased to discover that recent technological advances have been brought to bear on Twitterdom that will now allow me to conveniently stalk hunt creepily shadow follow en masse all notable (and some not-so-notable) celebrities presently using the site.

God I love the internet. So much so, in fact, the internet might have to take out a restraining order against me!

Non-Specific Top However-Many-Items-I-Can-Think-of List for 2008

Thewire

Being asked to compile a best-of list always makes me happy that I have a blog, because I can never remember anything, not even pop culture that I've enjoyed in a 12-month period. But I have a "plop culture" category that I spent a few minutes perusing this morning and I said a lot of things like, "Oh, YEAH, that WAS awesome!"

10 Things From 2008 That Made Me Forget How Much I Hate Everything Else

Yeah, you know, we do a fair amount of kvetching and bitching and raging here at Mamapop. Either popular culture is just all around sinking to a Speidi level of irritainment...or all the writers here are a bunch of old cranky old cranks who have nothing better to do than wave our virtual rakes at everything that pisses us off.

I dunno. Tough call, there.

But! In the spirit of the season and the fresh hope of a new year, here are 10 things that made me supremely, sublimely happy in 2008:

Twitter: A Good Place for Crazies Like Me

Whale

I will admit to being late to the Twitter party. I mistakenly thought that it was for text message posts only, until Tracey straightened me out back in April and told me that it was web-based. And that, duh, I needed to get on board as soon as possible.

Of course, I am completely addicted to Twitter now. And so are some of my favorite fictional characters.

Beyonce Creates Some of the Best Cultural Moments

Beyonce_single_ladies

This week, I was originally going to write about a NY Times article on the best web clips of 2008 for Monday and then piggy back with this Beyonce piece today. However, I had some popes to be mean to yesterday. And I think it works better this way.

My Netflix Queue Just Got Bigger (heehee)

It's A Brave New World: MTV Introduces The "Music Video"

Mtv

Gather 'round, children, and let Granny Banshee tell you about this relic they put right next to the dinosaur bones in the museum. It was called "the music video" and those crazy kids with their hair and their "rock and roll" music and their "MTV" used to watch them aaaaall day long in the prehistoric age called "The 80s." Well thanks to your "interwebs" you too can see, well, U2 in all their mulleted glory, thanks to a website called mtvmusic.com.

Let's go to history class!

10 Gnomes, And For Once I'm Not Talking About Tom Cruise

So far today I've started and deleted posts about Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Kate Hudson and a whole heap of boring celebrity couplings that I cannot even work up the faintest amount of genuine interest in. So until the gossip establishment can bring us actual video of Katie Holmes going batshit bitchy ballistic on her household staff, I'm going to annoy y'all with a timesucker post, guaranteed to eat up several hours of this gorgeous holiday Monday.

The 10 Gnomes series of games is, at first glance, seemingly relaxing: beautiful black-and-white photographs of various urban scenes, haunting music, and a leisurely point-and-click goal. Find clickable areas within the photo (your cursor will change when you've found one) and zoom in and continue to click around until you find 10 animated little gnomes hiding in the scene.

10_gnomes

But oh yeah, you've only got 10 minutes to find them, and it's just not as easy as you'd think.

The Internet Party II, from Those Aren't Muskets

Ok, I've posted before about Those Aren't Muskets, creators of my favorite geek-based humor EVAR, and I am happy to report that their latest effort is full of win and lolz. First, however, if you've never seen "The Internet Party" watch this one first, because otherwise the sequel won't make sense and I take your appreciation of random viral humor videos VERY SERIOUSLY.

The Original Internet Party:

And now, the Internet Party II: An Intervention for MySpace:
